    Are you circumcised?

As our two neighborhood docs have said, there really isn't a medically justifiable reason to circumcise a newborn. It's an aesthetic issue. So let's put the procedure in the correct category: it's a cosmetic surgery. Me: Like most boys born in England at the time, circumcised. Wish I wasn't.

    Strength training with dumbbells

I haven't tried it, but John Basedow's Fitness Made Simple series has a couple videos that emphasize the use of a very limited set of free weights, especially dumbbells. A couple people in the fitness trainer program at the community college have seen them, and thought they were really pretty good.

I seem to be maintaining . . . not loosing or gaining. But as the weather improves here I'll get out on my bike and out hiking a lot more, and that'll help. Hybrid Vehicles - When Will you purchase one

Hybrid or something else . . . Replacing one of our two well-maintained and good-condition cars with a hybrid doesn't make economic, environmental, or even political sense right now. On the economic front, it just doesn't make sense to trade in a working vehicle on one that gets better gas...

    It's Wednesday weigh ins! 2007-2022

I haven't been on ER for a while, but thought I'd update my Wednesday weigh ins. I wouldn't want you to think I'd given up! Life is keeping me very busy, so instead of working out five times a week, I'm working out just once or twice on top of my generally pretty active lifestyle. That's...

    computer networking questions

Not as exposed. I can cruise my neighborhood and locate a dozen WiFi networks in ten minutes or less. Homeplug networks don't broadcast their presence and data thieves generally have softer targets they can tap into, and you can crack most "secured" wireless LANs using hacker tools like...

A twist to the Global Warming Debate

OK, so the Australian Institute of Public Affairs -- a conservative organization favoring free trade and relaxed regulation -- finds a scientist to present a paper. Isn't it amazing that the presentation was overwhelmingly anti-regulation and pro-free-trade? Like, gosh, I always go to a...

    Cheney Response on the War.

Of course we know nothing. If the Bush administration has its way, we'll stay ignorant, even if we have the right to know. Science Fiction Legend Arthur C. Clarke, 90, Die

Though he wrote many wonderful books, I will always remember him by a favorite from my early teen years, Childhood's End. It is a tribute to the man that he wrote many books that will grace many bookshelves for generations after we have joined him beyond the veil.

Perhaps I was unclear about what I meant by "strategic." My idea of "strategic" is "economically strategic," not "militarily strategic." Fifty years from now there may be very little easily accessed crude oil left to drill up. Hydrocarbon feedstock is vital to the manufacture of many products...

    Fitness for dummies?

Absolutely. Seven or eight months of the year Portland is an amazing place to live if you love riding your bike. (The other few months it rains or gets freezing cold.) NewGuy, that works for some people, but jogging isn't something my knees do well anymore. One alternative to jogging that I do enjoy is bicycling, which gives me the opportunity to explore parts of the county I wouldn't otherwise ever see. Riding a bike doesn't do damage to my knees like running...
