    Tipping

I have occasionally been offered a tip, and always politely declined. It is quite unnecessary. People should receive the wage or rate they contracted for. Tipping (paying extra) is for credulous fools.

    Tipping at a buffet

And ...? The thread topic said nothing about “Tipping at a buffet in the USA”. Neither did the original post. I’ve been on this board for almost 15 years. It benefits from a cosmopolitan perspective; and invariably suffers whenever anyone implies that discussion is effectively restricted to a...

    Tipping for the holidays

Read your previous post. (Rather than answering the question posed by the OP) you made a general statement and explained why you like to tip generously, and then expressly asked why some might choose otherwise. You shouldn’t be surprised when other people follow your discursive example and then...

    Tipping at a buffet

Some people attempt to justify their insistence that everyone else must tip by saying “If you can’t afford to tip, you shouldn’t eat at a restaurant.” Well, maybe. But the converse also applies: if you can’t afford to do without tips, you should look for a different job that doesn’t rely on...

    Who changed it to 20%

Tipping no more Not in Ontario. Effective January 1, 2021, servers must be paid (at least) the standard minimum wage of $15/hr: i.e. the same as all other employees, the vast majority of whom are not commonly tipped. There will no longer be any justification for this outmoded, sexist and...

    Tipping for the holidays

Minimum wage for restaurant servers is already at $12.55/hour, and as of January 1st increases to $15/hour. That's a decent wage for unskilled work. YMMV, but I see no need to tip on top of it.

    “Outdoor” dining

Definitely. Masking is prudent, but is not a panacea. Physical distancing is the only reliable way to avoid infection. The constant reminders to “wear a mask whenever you can’t maintain social distance” are somewhat counterproductive, in that they arguably imply that masking is an effective...

    “Outdoor” dining

I sure hope your prediction is accurate, but that timeline seems optimistic. I suspect it will take substantially longer until widespread vaccination enables a return to pre-Covid normality. Only time will tell.

Is it Wise Buy Furnace and Other Parts in Case Pandemic Cuts Supply Chains?

Having two of everything, so that a spare is always readily available, would require me to become a bigamist.

    “Outdoor” dining

That’s incorrect. 1) Hotels need not involve close interactions with members of other households, so are pretty low risk. 2) Gyms, religious gatherings, weddings and funerals do not require taking masks off, so involve significantly less risk of Covid-19 transmission. To be safest, such...

    “Outdoor” dining

Relevant article: The Atlantic: Don’t Eat Inside a Restaurant So true. That sums up my own approach. The tents I have seen, and am worried about, are very large and accommodate multiple dining parties; not individual plastic igloos. While tables inside the tents look separated, presumably...

Is it Wise Buy Furnace and Other Parts in Case Pandemic Cuts Supply Chains?

The illusion of choice While anything is possible, it seems unlikely that four manufacturers are independently making exactly the same model of furnace. More likely, one Asian supplier makes all the furnaces and it is simply sold on to retail consumers under several different brand names.

RIFed due to COVID-19, the slate is wiped clean

Congratulations on the new position! Probably no real harm to it, but IMO it’s pretty useless. Certainly LinkedIn is no panacea, and should not be more than a small part of any job search.

Is it Wise Buy Furnace and Other Parts in Case Pandemic Cuts Supply Chains?

I tend to agree. Personally I believe that to be paranoia/insane overkill, buying and storing a complete duplicate furnace to guard against the (remote?) contingencies that (1) something will break and (2) a replacement part will be unobtainable. However, who am I to say that your concern is...

    “Outdoor” dining

Indoor dining is now generally accepted as a prime source of Covid-19 transmission, so has been banned where I live. Outdoor dining is relatively safe and remains legal. However, with winter on the way and temperatures falling, it is less and less comfortable; so many restaurants are reacting...

    RIF to FI? to FIRE?

Yes, fair enough. My point was not to complain about high taxes; rather, I just wanted to note that when it comes to retirement planning, saving a certain percentage of gross income isn't terribly meaningful. X% of net income is a bit more helpful, but what is really needed is a comparison of...

Which sounds fine, as long as you don't live in Sweden, Quebec, Ontario, Denmark or some other place with a top marginal rate exceeding 55%.
