    Blow that Dough 2024

I just started a BTD project. My kitchen is original to the house (40 years). The refrigerator was 40 years old and the stove was 33 years. I hung on as long as I could but the stove finally gave up. I went ahead and bought new fridge, stove and dishwasher and just had them delivered on...

    Monthly Grocery Expenditure

For two of it’s about $700 per month for groceries and eating out. Groceries include paper products and cleaning products. On average we eat out about once a week.

Bone Graft for a Dental Implant

I have one implant that is a couple of years old. Lower molar, and I did not need any bone graft. The oral surgeon said I had enough bone for the implant. So far, everything is going well. At each visit my regular dentist comments that the implant looks good.

    Wayfair Now Horrible?!

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I purchased a pair of gold earrings as a gift. They were cheap, flimsy, and sent in a little drawstring sack that was filthy. I returned them and left a poor review which included a photo. My review was removed with the excuse that they don’t allow...

Do you want to manage it?

This definitely resonates with me. I consider myself a minimalist, and when I reflect on it I realize that I have had these tendencies since I was young. And the older I get, the less stuff I want to have. Before I buy anything I think about whether I want to store it, clean it, maintain it...

    Your Favorite 2023 Purchase?

My best purchase this year was probably the new mattress. The old one was close to 20 years old, the new one really is more comfortable.

    DW's engagement/wedding ring

I think it would be lovely to make several small pendants from the diamonds, perhaps one for each of the women. If they aren't interested in that right now, you could just hold onto it as their interest might change in the future. It sounds like that ring holds a lot of sentiment, and they...

    Your most memorable Christmas toys

A stuffed koala bear. I still remember how excited I was when I picked up the wrapped gift and knew what it was. Believe it or not, I still have it!

Diminishing Returns on Retirement Planning Time?

Before I retired I would fret about all the things that could go wrong, generating large unexpected expenses. At some point it hit me that yes, I did need to prepare for a large unexpected expense at any time, but it was highly unlikely that *everything* would go wrong in the same year. At...

    Tax prep software offers

After reading this thread I decided to try H&R Block Deluxe this year (got it at Newegg with the $25 discount, so it came to just $24.99). I've been a long-time user of TT Deluxe, but was getting tired of the price jumping every year. I already uploaded last year's TT file into H&R Block and...

    Tipping

We have a local restaurant that we normally eat lunch at maybe once a month. Their Tip screen now shows 25/22/20, in that order. As if to say that 20% is the bare minimum and makes me feel like I'm being cheap. I'm so annoyed about this that I am finding myself less and less inclined to dine...

Poll: Do You Remove Shoes Entering Your House?

I never wear shoes in the house. Not only does it keep me from tracking dirt in, but I am more comfortable in socks or slippers. I have two pairs of outdoor clogs. One pair just outside the door, on the back deck and one pair just outside the door to the garage. When I need to go out back...

Those Who don't/didn't do Roth Conversions

For those that mention paying no tax on their Roth conversions, do you not end up paying state tax? Even in the years when I converted at the zero percent Fed tax level, I always ended up paying state tax on the full amount. So, state taxes along with impact on my ACA subsidy have to be...

Tacky new wedding trend: Why newlyweds aren’t sending thank yous

I agree, I'd be happy with a note, a text, or an email. More than anything I want to know that the gift was received. Especially in this era of mail theft, porch pirates, etc., it really is good to hear that the gift made it to the recipient!

Tacky new wedding trend: Why newlyweds aren’t sending thank yous

Almost 10 years ago I attended the wedding of a friend’s daughter. I gave the couple a gift card. In hindsight, I wish I had put the gift card in a small box and wrapped it, but I put it in a card and placed it with the other gifts. I never received a thank you, and have always wondered if the...

Brigg Straton Engine No Oil Change Required

I bought a Craftsman self-propelled "no oil-change" mower with B&S engine 3 years ago. I have not (and don't intend to) change the oil on it, although I do check the oil every few mows. So far, no problems. The last mower I had made it about 8 years and I'll be satisfied if I get about the...

Amway - how do you respond?

When I was in my 20s I had a very good friend whose husband was really pushing Amway. Of course he never referred to it by name, only “the business”. They invited me to their home for a presentation. The wife was such a good friend that I agreed to join, but never really participated. It...
