The first million takes the longest to achieve

I used to meet with my new hires in a production unit. I'd close the meeting encouraging them to take advantage of our 401k. Using a calculator like this (https://www.calculator.net/401k-calculator.html) it was enlightening to see when investment growth became larger than their contributions.

    Callan Table 2023

As the table says, "conveys the strong case for diversification". I was happy to see that Developed ex-US Equity finished pretty high since I have 16% of my equities there.

(Interest & dividends we spend + pre-tax IRA withdrawals)/portfolio balance = Withdrawal rate. For us it's 1.3%. Taking SS late helped a lot, I think.

    Final 2023 Expenses

Inflation-adjusted, our in-retirement annual spending has been around $113,000 the last several years. This includes property tax, sales taxes, and vehicle taxes but not income taxes. Also includes vacations, my DW's Amazon addition and some pretty good bourbons for me.

July 1989 Money Magazine: Where to put $1000 Now!

I loved Money magazine although it did lead to over-complicating our portfolio including dabbling in single company stocks. I guess too much information was dangerous for me. Thankfully I've recovered.

Agree. I'm not smart enough to time the market, nor convinced that anyone else is either. Just staying the course has served us with more than enough after 47 years of investing.

A decade later - finally hitting $1 Million!

Congratulations! One thing I found interesting was the impact of fees on my portfolio growth. John Bogle coined the term "the tyranny of compounding costs". PBS did a segment on this. Here is a chart giving an example: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/retirement/etc/tyranny.html

What got you excited about retirement saving?

When I was growing up my farm parents didn't have a lot of money, but my friends' parents did. I wanted to be like them, so I had the motivation to make money. I found the 'how' when I learned about 'the magic of compound interest', time being the major factor. I started investing in a 401k when...

What you actually spend vs planned to spend in retirement

The same. Retired 10 years ago. Been tracking expenses since 2009. Inflation adjusted annual spending has remained pretty much the same, +/-10%. Mortgage and kids' college expenses prior to retirement have been replaced with spending on home improvements and vacations.
