IMHO this falls into the "just follow the rules and don't sweat it" category. I agree with Ha. Just rent a tux, and enjoy the evening. The cost will not impact your lifestyle.

I was faced with a similar issue some years back and decided I wouldn't be pressured into wasting money on a tux rental for a couple of hours. I wore a dark suit and it was fine. Others confided in me that they felt railroaded into the tux rental.

So, my vote is to do what makes you happy - they don't get to ask you for money and tell you what to wear.
