Class of 2015

FIREd

After two rounds of "two-more-weeks syndrome", today was finally my last day. Been planning for this eight years, but it seems remarkably anticlimactic now. I'm sure it's going to take a while to sink in.

That said, I am so glad I'm not facing 80+ hour, high-stress weeks. I've been feeling guilty as I reduced my hours over the last couple of weeks while everyone else at work is stressed to their breaking points.

Cheers to the other members of the class of 2015.

That's how I'm feeling too. I got 5 more weeks til I am vested and resigning is seeming very much an insignificant event...anticlimactic.

Dad retiring

My dad is retiring this year after 26 years of toiling in the salt mines. He doesn't post on here but Im very proud of him. Unfortunately my brother just got laid off and I was denied a promotion at my federal gig despite being fully successful and exceeding my annual goals.

These events are just what I need to keep me motivated to retire ASAP!

congrats Travel4fun

Congrats on reaching the start line. Hopefully you get to spend more time living your screen name. 80+ hour weeks can't be good for you.

I will be joining everyone in a month and a day.

Please add me to the list!

Will ER on or about the 4th of July, 2015 (yes - Independence day).

Will be almost 53 yo at retirement - not as early as some on the forum - but well before my looks start to go :D

Well, seeing as I had put down February, and it's almost the end of the month, I should post an update...

Pardon the length, but it's a stream-of-consciousness kind of thing...

As much as I really Really REALLY want to walk away from this job, and ER, the "FI" part may not be quite there yet. My original 4-year stock grant at the startup I'm at (since IPO'd) has fully vested, and in their first four quarters as a public company, they've reported beat-and-raise earnings announcements. But, the stock isn't quite where I'd like it to be, mostly because they're not profitable yet, but are on track to hit profitability by the end of this fiscal year (which we just started).

The company has been growing revenue, and expenses as a percentage are declining, but it's going to take about another four quarters to hit profitability, and based on current revenue and multiples for our industry, the Street isn't going to value us much higher until we hit that.

Which all makes sense, and I'm glad the fundamentals are sound, but damn it, I wish we could hit profitability sooner. Oh well.

I've got enough cash and secondary stock grants to live on for at least 12 to 18 months without touching my original grant, but I hesitate to do that and maybe start eating into the original grant before it really has a chance to take off.

One of the things I had planned on was to live off cash and secondary grant for 12-18 months, and provided the stock is at a certain value, cash in enough to buy a home free and clear (yes, I know it might be better to get a mortgage instead, but I want a home all my own without any lien on it), and then start cashing in stock as needed over time to fund retirement.

But I DO NOT want to stay where I'm at.

An opportunity at another startup might be opening up for me, and it might be a chance for me to get a salary bump and another stock grant that would let me feather the nest more while I see what my current company's stock does over the next year. Assuming they do hit profitability and it starts going up, then I could leave the new place after the one year cliff and still have a little stock in case they "make it", it would give me a little more.

But no way would I stay the full four years. Just one, to make it over the vesting cliff.

As much as I hate to even consider it, because I really want to leave and move back to Colorado, I might need to do a "one and done" to ensure the financial plan is sound.

Decisions, decisions...

Monday is my last day at the university and three thoughts from last week:

1. Sad - for the two fellows that were forced to retire after decades of service. Both look at a loss for the future.
2. Sad - for my peers that are left behind. The change in leadership (the word doesn't really apply here - the new guys making decisions) is what caused me to accelerate my plans. My friends will be working harder as the program sinks around them. It is even more painful if you care.
3. Happy - that a coworker told me that I was her role model. Seeing that I had the FI power of choice opened her eyes to the "not going to take this crap" option. Guess which web site link I sent her?

Well, I am now retired. I'm 53.

My last day of full-time w*rk was yesterday. (I will consult on an hourly basis, as needed, for a few months, but I don't anticipate doing much. And I can always not return their calls if they get pesky!) :)

My co-workers threw me a wonderful cocktail party and sent me off in style. Various congratulatory lunches and libations were also enjoyed over the last couple of weeks (including a small surprise cocktail hour with my SO and some of our friends).

A bit bittersweet, but I am ready to go on to the next phase of life. After about 30 years in the law, time to leave that wo*k world behind!

Thanks to all on this board for their wisdom and encouragement over the last year, as I w*rked my way to the finish.

61. Whisper66 - March 1, 2015, age 55

it's now official. I have retired. Took a bit of vacation before my actual date so I've been getting used to "retirement" for a few weeks now. And for the record - loving every minute of it!

Thanks to all those that participate in this board. Like others, I have learned a lot from the discussions and they've made me much more comfortable in making my own decision.

To those considering retirement - I honestly think you will know when it's right for you. I personally wouldn't want to jump from a good job (assuming that's your status) until I was confident of my next step. And retirement can be a very big step, especially for those of us that don't plan on anything but our savings, investments and SS to live on. The factual knowledge on this board (and use of Firecalc) is tremendous in helping one understand and get comfortable with the economic side of things. The personal experiences you read on this board are great in comparing how you think you might feel in retirement given your situation. Good luck to you in your decision making.

OK. Today was my last day of full time work. Occasional consulting is possible, but only on my terms. Just in time for spring. The future is so bright....

70. Tekward March 2, 2015 age 57.

Congrats, Tekward. Let me guess: You stayed for the first workday of March to get health coverage for the month? :)

Congrats Whisper and Tekward. Leave the door open for those of us coming behind you 😉

That's correct Mo. I've been smiling all day and I just realized that tomorrow is Saturday. And so is the next day and the next.

Updating list and changing my date to June. Still trying to determine if company stock is at a level where I feel comfortable taking a year or two off and living off cash and a small secondary option grant while I see if it continues to climb.

The crystal ball is getting clearer, but still a bit cloudy...

Had my last Annual Review this morning!!! It was given more as a formality since they were redone to be a preview of the upcoming year instead of a rehash of the prior year it is a preview of what the upcoming year will look like.
I had a draft version showing my resource needs as "plenty of suntan lotion" and a successful year is "a good tan and no sunburn"! My boss didn't think that was funny, but I had a good laugh! Just 120 days (only 78 of which are w*rk days) to go!

Congrats, Taxman. Each day that decrements represents a larger and larger percentage of those that remain! I like your joke in the annual review doc. Too bad your manager lacks a good sense of humor.

Today at a meeting, I forgot myself and voiced my opinion of the boss's pet project. Oops. Luckily I quickly recovered and let the issue die. It was sort of a "Emperor's New Clothes" moment. I only voiced what many others were thinking...

Little by little I am mentally disengaging from w*rk. Pretty soon I won't care one bit.

Philliefan33 - Have you chosen a date yet? Don't see one in the list for you but it must be getting close cause you obviously are getting the itch pretty strong at this point!

My date was going to be 3/31. But then a little birdie told me that I might get a severance package but the decision wouldn't be made until after Q1. So now my last day will be no later than June 12 (we have a trip planned and I want to be retired while on that trip). If the package comes sooner, or I learn that there will be no severance, then I'll bail sooner.

In the meantime I'm doing what I can to avoid the BS and make my days more enjoyable.

Talked to the boss Friday. July 2015, I'll either retire or work over the internet part-time. I did some portfolio adjustments Friday and over the weekend. (I'm 56 and will be 57 in May, so 57 at retirement.)
