Class of 2015

Looking really forward to it. I want to go back to Colorado for a couple years, and do all those outdoor things I enjoy but never could do much of because a job got in the way...hiking, camping, backpacking, week-long photography trips, etc. I also want to live somewhere near a ski resort and fulfill a bucket list item of being a ski bum for a season

You and I are on the same path. 46 Years old and excited about 2015. It can't come soon enough. I do get worried about being greedy and staying longer. I also worry about not being able to last until 2015 too :)

Working until spring 2015, call it April 2015 as target. Will be 52 and looking forward to it. Only concern like many is the unknown health care cost question. Doing good for health, but there is just so much uncertainty now for health care it is hard to plan for cost numbers with so much chance for large increases.

Well, in my rush with signing up and reading stuff, I did not do so good on my math. It is 2.5 years from now, correct that I will be 52 then, but it will be 2016

So I guess I failed the class of 2015 and get sent back a year for 2016  :(

At least I seem to do better with my math and planning in other areas.......

Count me in. Or at least, this is the plan of of record. July 4th is Independence Day. See what I mean? :greetings10:

This actually works well for us, as I have a deferred compensation plan with a first lump sum 6 months after my resignation, and I would like to make it happen on a taxable year without my regular salary of 1H'15 pushing up the tax bracket! I actually have a fairly detailed plan, month after month, of things to do... Can't wait. I am so bored at work right now.

Our first big thing after retirement will be a big family trip, most likely in South Korea (backup option, South Africa). My wife spends an inordinate amount of time watching Korean TV on the Internet and learning a lot about the corresponding culture. We went to Japan and Australia a few years ago, so this is the next step of our 'discover the world journey'.

Count me in too

Add me to the list. Let's see 2015 target, I will be 48. This has taken a lot of work and sacrifice along the way. Started two companies, saved a lot, lived well below my means, and no kids. While I won't be living in a mansion, I will have a nice lifestyle very soon.

Funny. I was thinking about this post & thread while exercising (yeah, this is part of the retirement plan too!), and making such a public post about my ER target date... This was... LIBERATING!! :)

It's everything I can do to not jump ship early at the place I'm at. It's starting to drive me crazy. We've gone from 50 people when I joined, to almost 500, and it feels like a "big" company to me.

(and yes, I know what truly big companies feel like, because I've worked for places like HP years ago)

I hate it. Instead of getting work done, now I get dragged into meetings where we just TALK about getting work done.

God grant me the ability to just suffer through another 17 months, and then I'm throwing off the golden handcuffs and getting outta there.

At my company people talk about the "Golden Handcuffs" all the time too. Some of us are tempted to jump ship earlier but if we leave before age 55 (government agency) you take a big hit, but some days it is pretty tempting.

One guy retired at age 50 and moved to Tennessee. The agency is in San Diego. He sold his high priced house in Coastal North County San Diego County and bought a nice place in Tennessee all cash, with plenty left over.

Everyone gave him hell. He loved living in Tennessee, fishing, hunting etc. He died at age 55 of a heart attack followed by a stroke. He had 5 great years in Tennessee. He followed his dream and did not care about bumping up his pension those final five years. He had many more years of service than I do, but I think about him all the time when I am tempted to jump ship early.

omg, I could have written this post! Nice to know there are others out there. It eases the suffering

I'm be joining this class in June 2015 at the age of 52. I just hit my number today, and will be working between now and then to fill three more buckets - for roof replacement, new car and that big 'unplanned' expense.

I am 200k away from my number and my unplanned buckets are already included. If the market stays on track, I may be FIRE earlier than planned. Still nervous that the market might correct as soon as I announce. Good problem to have

Ok, how about a few updates? I've the following:

545 more days OR
77 weeks and change OR
17 months and change OR
316 days +/- that I actually have to work

Yessss

Love the countdown! Lately have been updating my financial spreadsheet daily, checking and rechecking, etc. I need to have a year pass so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. W**K is financially going well, but I am so over it.

We're looking at three "threshold" dates for DW to retire or be permanently laid off (she works as an underwriter for a Health insurance company). We're currently 55 (me) and 54 (DW) with almost enough money to go now. Here are the dates we're looking at:

1. 1/1/14: DW turns 55 late in 2014, so retiring in that calendar year would let us leave her 401k at Megacorp, while taking non-penalty withdrawals and TIRA to Roth conversions to use up our 15% bracket - for as many years as possible. Much simpler & more flexible than 72T option.

2. 10/7/14: DW's 55th birthday. Eligible to retire and start taking a $500 / mo pension and receive a $600 / month HSA contribution (for LIFE, unless they change the rules!)

3. 1/2/15: Layoff would put severance package into new calendar year and this puts us past payment of final semester college tuition for DD. We would still get the benefits of 1. and 2. above - best of all possible worlds by my reckoning! That's only 439 calendar days = 314 working days!

Me: Small self-employed business, I could sell down & close up any time but no severance or unemployment.

Put us down for 2015!

10. haloFIRE - August 14th - age 47
11. RobLJ--May through August

I'm 55 and within about a 15% portfolio increase of retiring with a high confidence. I probably can semiretire while DW works for another 2-5 years; we could take that route now, but I qualify for retiree health benefits in August 2014. Plan to move to Pacific NW from Texas.

Looks like we have some new attendees to the party. Welcome to the class of 2015! I will update the list later today before it gets crazy. 525 more days, of which, I will work 292.
