Class of 2017

Day 22 of retirement. Have been lazier than expected. Ticked off one more item on the list yesterday. Bought our next home, a tenement on wheels (33' motorhome). We'll go pick it up in a couple weeks, get it stocked with the necessities and do some short trips to figure out what we got ourselves into. Then, before the snow flies, we'll head south for the winter. Fun times ahead!

Do you only count people who are retiring completely? I'm dialing back to part-time in 4 weeks. Not sure if that classifies me as Class of 2017, but I'm looking forward to it.

We retired on June 15, 2017 at age 57.
Just returned from a 3 week family trip to Niagara Falls, NYC, Washington DC and Philly!

Now getting started with home renovation.

Just returned from a 3 week family trip to Niagara Falls, NYC, Washington DC and Philly!
Now getting started with home renovation.

I am at the three-month home stretch, and I am reframing the time remaining as, "You are here to write up the processes and procedures related to your desk, and to do the bare minimum aside from that." I boxed up and took home most of the tchotchkes (twenty years worth), and it is a visual reminder that I am truly just here for the short term.

Looking through the archives, I see that some people (W2R stands out) salted their vacation time through their home stretch, to make it bearable. I think about that, and I balance it against the modest vacation payoff I will receive, and am taking the odd day here or there as opportunity presents itself.

Just thirteen weeks to go, and the Sunday anxiety beast will be dead. Counting, counting, counting.

Today I handed in my retirement application to HR and got the form to start the checkout process. I have 9 weeks to go but the checkout process requires signatures from 14 departments and an interview with legal and security. Thankfully my most difficult work project was postponed by our customer until next year and I have one last project that is not too demanding. I've also been working on my Retirement "To Do" list (e.g., get a HELOC) but need to step it up.

No countdown app for me! I have August and September of the "US Government Calendar" posted on the reusable cardboard display pad on my cubicle wall. Starting tomorrow I will be "X"ing off each day in red until my retirement date. Sort of a conversation piece.

I added a few new classmates and updated some of the retirement dates on our class roster.

I am listed above as June 2017. Half of us made that date!:) DW retired from public education at the end of this past school year. (age 57)

We've looked at it many ways and our current plan is for me to retire at the end of December - just making it so that I can graduate with my class. (age 59 3/4)

My only caveat is we really need to have the suburban Atlanta boat anchor/5-4-and-a-door sold or at least under contract. I don't anticipate this being a problem, as the housing market has gotten stupid around here in the last 6-9 months. Houses are being bidded up from asking and an agent friend told me that the average time on the market in my 350 home neighborhood in the last 6 months is 4.5 days. I've never seen houses bidded up in this part of metro ATL before. It makes me nervous, frankly.

In fact, I suspect we will sell quickly and then I'll be stuck asking the boss for forgiveness instead of permission to telecommute from our retirement home in Alabama for the remainder of my sentence. He might fire me....

Last day is tomorrow - my new replacement called in sick after having supposedly stayed up all night moving to his new home. That will bring the total number of days I have had to train him to seven. Fortunately I have also created a lot of documentation...

Long story short - my RE negotiations have begun. So I haven't yet retired in July, but it will happen in the next several months... so my month is now TBD.

63 working days left until Jan 2nd. They are going slow.......like a 7 year old waiting on Christmas!

Had my first official meeting with HR going over new amounts for retiree benefits.
She couldn't believe I would retire at 55 1/2. Told her why working days are equivalent to a 63 year old that worked 40 hour weeks.

My first Sunday with no work tomorrow! Checked out of work on Wed Aug 2 just like I had planned. Then hit the road to drive to Cincinnati where I am retiring at, got here yesterday.

I sold my house in NM at end of June, rented it back from the buyer for month of July. Movers packed the house Thurs 7/27, loaded onto truck Fri 7/28. Carpet cleaners came Sat 7/29 and then house was ready for the buyer. Lived in my MH on the property since Fri 7/28 to 8/1. Hit the road Wed 8/2 after checking out. Lot of people asked why leaving so quick; my response is no reason to stay! So my first few days of retirement were spent traveling.

Exited on 6-30 as planned. Past month has been busy (in a good way). Thoroughly enjoying the days! No stress & just one earthly boss (DW).

Had lunch last Friday with a couple of w*rk buddies. I enjoyed a beer with my meal just to twist the ol' knife a tad.

Unfortunately, I'm out. Recent events are requiring a rethink and reschedule. Need to keep very good mga-corp medical in place for a while. Not sure where I'll drop in.

Sorry to hear that. Hoping that you can rejoin ranks swiftly. Best wishes in dealing with what lies ahead.

I'm flunking out of class of 2017 "September" and moving to January 2018.
Going to 2 days work from home and have 4 weeks vacation coming in 2017 and per policy will be able to take all 5 weeks in 2018 so it seemed very doable to move into 2018.

Well, I made it official... my last day is September 29th. My financial situation has improved a bit over the course of this year, enabling me to start with a SWR of 3.9%, then (if I stay this course) shift that down to 3.5% at age 62 when SS kicks in.

There's a pretty good chance I'll be w*rking for megacorp part-time next year, we'll see...

Welcome to the Class of 2017, mistermike! Working part-time is a nice option to have and shouldn’t be too bad if you can keep the number of days down to a manageable level. I’m retiring at the same time as you and I’m starting to get more excited about it as I mark off each day on my calendar. Finally retirement is becoming a reality!

Sorry you left us capjak but a few more months is not that bad. And moving the vacation time to 2018 may reduce the taxes. Since I’m cashing in some vacation time at a high tax bracket, it would have been better to wait to next year but I’m 62 and have already done the Two More Year thing so want to get out of here. Plus October is the nicest part of the year.

Thanks ABQ2015... the finish line is in sight for both of us!

If I work next year (or beyond) it will probably be ~3 days a week, from home. I'm not sure yet though... right now I'm just looking forward to adjusting to retirement... I don't think it will very difficult :)

Slipping away?

Well, when I put myself in class of 2017, I thought I would be retired by today, August 31, or at least have visibility to my actual date. But I don't. Taking stock:

  • FI for a couple years now
  • Son off the payroll
  • Employed in my longtime position
  • DW still working, happily, has summers off

Theoretically, could RE at any time. But company is for sale and the exit would have a meaningful impact on net worth, but not make or break.

At this moment, I can't say I know when the exit will take place. So I feel that my status is Class of 2017 is tenuous.

Yes, I could just set a date and retire. It would seem a bit anti-climactic. BS bucket getting pretty full, I will say that.

So if i can't "pick it up" then I may be slipping into 2018, sadly. But for now, will stay in 2017 with no date noted. Hope springs eternal.

Update: after one flight cancellation (thanks, Harvey) we are now safely ensconced in western Mexico. Next (final?) milestone will hit 10/31 when the wife's first pension check arrives.

Follow Up. My last day of work was 11 Aug--two weeks early thanks to my replacement reporting in early for the turn over.

The euphoria is not fading after 3 weeks. I've been involved in a lot of transition activities to keep me busy. Moving houses, shedding excess house hold goods by the ton. Down to 16,000 lbs...its a start anyway. I've got a large household with 4 kids and a dog. They need a lot of equipment.

Moving to Spain to do our experiment in international living. Figured it was now or never if we wanted our kids to get a taste before going off to college while the Army was offering to store our goods for a year.

I have two girls in college now who will stay to finish here in the states, one senior and one jr. So, too late for them unfortunately., but they can always spend their summer with us. The other two girls--yes four girls--are still in middle and high school with relocate with me and DW.

It has been enjoyable to plug into this thread to share this experience with everyone because all of my friends and peers stare at me like a pig looking at a wrist watch when I tell them I'm retiring, retiring and not actively searching/stressing for W**k.

Originally in the Class of 2018, I decided to move the date up a bit. Today is my last day in the office!
