Class of 2022

Congrats!

I've heard so many stories of people leaving their jobs for just this reason. Employers just don't get it. People preferred working from home. They were happier. They were more productive. Their costs dropped with no commuting. They had more free time in their day as a result of not spending an hour or two on the road. No more dry cleaning expenses. Less eating out. More family time. And ultimately, it saved the companies money too. Hopefully more employers will come around and make remote work permanent when possible.

Steve, you're absolutely right...MORE PRODUCTIVE is the KEY from the employers point of view. Today, I did a 2 hour commute to get to my office, only to get onto TEAMS calls at my desk, because the technology in the conference rooms we were intending to use wasn't working properly!? How much dumber or more obvious can it get from the employer's standpoint?!
Many of us lucky enough to be able to consider retirement are doing so now. The best performing younger employees are looking for new jobs with the many companies that have permanently adopted remote or hybrid work schedules. I pity those people who are LEFT to pick up the slack, who can't retire or easily change jobs!

Exercised my last 250 stock options on Tuesday. I can go at any time now. Haven't told work yet. I took two weeks of PTO in Feb/March and my manager, VP and sales support STRUGGLED to keep the machine running in my absence. I hate to leave them in a lurch, but I think my notice will be 30 days at most. I have been requesting administrative support for the last year. They wont free up a head count, so they will reap the rewards of some PO'd customers and a messy contract. It looks like our spend is about 1.6% SWR, so I really dont know why I am waiting.

This is NOT your problem to solve.

If you can get out with a 1.6% SWR you've already stayed too long. Give notice and enjoy the next phase.

Well, the deed is done... well almost.
My official last day of work was Friday so I could get paid for the Good Friday holiday but my last actual day of work was Thursday. I was planning to use Thursday head into the office and drop my gear off but that's not happening now until Monday.

Last Thursday was my last day and I’d say so far so great. Was just sitting here watching the basketball game thinking how nice it is to not have to worry about what I’m supposed to do tomorrow.
Congrats!
I've got to say, it hasn't really hit me yet. I think I need to slowly come to the realization that I don't have to stress about meeting a deadline.

I enjoyed a week of no alarm clocks, no video calls, and no back-to-back meetings. I had more family time by enjoying an afternoon with my dad, another with my mother in law, and babysitting my nephew’s kids one morning. I spent hours playing my piano and walking outside. It has been a very good week!
That sounds pretty wonderful!

We decided recently that we were as ready as we were going to get so yesterday I gave notice to drop from PT to per diem. That will take effect no later than August 10 (our contracts require 120 days notice). So as of then, I won't be 100% retired, but I will not have any scheduled hours. I'll be free to pick up shifts whenever I'd like (based on availability).
It's fantastic that you're able to trend down like that. It sounds like a smoother transition than going from 100mph to 0 overnight. People have suggested to me transitioning to PT but there really wasn't a realistic path at my company to do that and I didn't want to find another job this late in my FI journey just to go to part time.

3 weeks ago we learned that my company required that we Return to Office 5 days/ week. Most of us were shocked and just about all were disappointed (to put it mildly), angry or disgusted.

...looks like October 16th will be my date (just about 6 months from now).

A couple of reasons why that date:
- our Pension plan considers Normal Retirement for collecting 100% of calculated pension benefits- age 65. Anything before that age is considered “early” and carries significant discounts i.e. 93% at age 64.
- I will reach my 33 year anniversary with the company on that date (nothing too significant economically about that but just a nice milestone date)
- We leqve on a 2 week trip to Italy on Oct 17 which has been planned for almost a year. Instead of using vacation time (and taking my work phone along) I will get paid out for my “unused “ vacation time and celebrate my retirement!

Now I just have to make it official (any recommendations about doing that?) and start the “wind down work” and start positioning myself for retirement!
Personally, I've been spoiled because my megacorp has been pretty progressive about working remotely/from home and we've been doing it for over a decade now. The missus is needing to gradually head back into the office and she's not loving it either.

Looks like you have a nice roadmap to your retirement in October. Similarly,I chose a date that would like up with as much stuff I can grab before I headed out the door: annual bonus, annual benefits renewal, work anniversary perks, etc. I was always planning to head on a cruise in the Baltics with a stop in St Petersburg after retirement but that went out the window with everything happening in the world!
I gave 3 months notice which is kind of excessive but I have a great relationship with my boss.

Exercised my last 250 stock options on Tuesday.

It looks like our spend is about 1.6% SWR, so I really dont know why I am waiting.

I had to leave 300 stock options on table which was turning out to be a nice chunk of change because they weren't going to vest for another 2 years and I wasn't going delay my retirement for it. I suspect I'll have a little bit of regret because the share price has been on a mini-tear recently among the greater market turmoil and the guidance for the next few years is pretty positive.

We all seem to focus overly on the math of personal finance (and retirement) and not enough on psychological stuff. The numbers are kind of the easy part because it's formulatic in a way whereas I find the psychological stuff needs a lot more thought.

Congrats YVRRocketSurgery! Did you sleep in?

Thanks! You bet I did/have been. [emoji23]

Dropped off my gear at the office on Monday afternoon after going out for breakfast and that was that. Pretty anti-climatic.
Congrats! I'm 3+ months in and just now getting past the decompression stage. You'll love this!!

Last Thursday was my last day and I’d say so far so great. Was just sitting here watching the basketball game thinking how nice it is to not have to worry about what I’m supposed to do tomorrow.

And that feeling doesn't go away for a long while. I've been retired over 3 years, and sometimes when another retiree and I meet in the field while birdwtaching we say simultaneously - "To think we could be WORKING today ..."

just now getting past the decompression stage.

I don't know if your post about decompressing got into my head but I had a nightmare last night about being under pressure to support a project that I was last working on before I retired. And when I groggily woke up from it, I was stressing about the weekend ending and having to work on it on Monday.

Kind if like the dream of having to take a final exam in college in a class you forgot you signed up for and never attended. I had that one for years.

Yep, I had those w*rk dreams for awhile. Just had one last week actually, where my boss was chasing me down an escalator asking if I was ready to return to the office [emoji23]

Cant believe its finally going to happen

What an amazing pleasure it is to finally add my name to this list...Gave notice of 3 months in April to leave in July.

What a relief too after finally making the announcement...Like many here, I'm relieved and yet also invigorated and excited to see what's ahead.

I've been working straight since High School, including full time during college...I like to say, I started early and now I'm leaving early ---It's my reward for all the hard work.

Well, flights are booked to leave the USA and head back to London and then Isle of Wight on Dec 14th. I’ll be the guy at the back of the plane looking down out of the window wavin’ and grinnin’ Forest Gump-style as we take off from ATL.

Don’t know if I’ll work the morning of that day or call it on the 13th, think it will be a last minute decision..

The series of mini retirements plan while a nice idea in theory isn’t for me anymore. Going to be 50 in a couple of months, and there’s more to life than this, time to remove the armbands and take the plunge for real.

Rather than staring at my desk Peter Gibbons style I keep writing post-it’s of new projects, ideas and activities I intend to pursue starting 15th Dec in full retirement, hiding them as colleagues walk by. They’re building up to a whole new post-it pad themselves!! It’s getting me through and stops me staring at the damn calendar.

Best of luck to everyone!!

Well, flights are booked to leave the USA and head back to London and then Isle of Wight on Dec 14th.

DD---Isle of Wight is a hidden gem down on the south coast that most people never get to discover or enjoy. There are some great video's on YT of a guy taking his motorbike all over the Island that I watched recently...Great choice...I was raised in Pompey, so I know it well...I'm a dual citizen too btw.

Gunwharf Quays is our big city shopping locale of choice when back home, beautiful place to just sit and enjoy in the summer.

Can someone remind me how to add my name to the class? I thought I read to copy and paste the list and add my name. Is that correct? May 27th is my date at age 56. Alternating between states of joy and terror ?. but fortunately more joy and very much looking forward to being able to breathe.

You are correct, copy and paste is the way.

That joy feeling is the best!

Slight change of plans led me to move the date up - Friday the 13th of May was my last day of work!!!
