At one point (3 yrs or so ago?) I heard there was a shortage of 22 ammo and it was very pricey to the point people were doing their own reloading. I guess no longer is the case?

There was a run that lasted until the presidential election in 2016. Since then it has been easy and cheap to buy whatever. No doubt it is just a matter of time until the next run, probably starting 6 months before the next presidential election. Anyone shooting rimfire would be well advised to stash a case or two of their favorite brand against that eventuality.

I used to shoot USPSA competitions with a .40 SVI with iron sights. Once my closeup eyesight diminished, I gave it up. Also have a .45 Springfield TRP Operator. Now prefer to shoot scoped target rifles. I have a Rem 700 5R mil spec in .308.

I used to fell squirrels with a pellet gun if they ventured into DW's garden. Lately, I prefer to pop 'em in the butt with a BB gun. While it stings, no harm is done. And it's hoot watching them react.

They are smart though. Once they know the risk, they'll spend several minutes in the neighbors' trees reconning the yard for me. If they think it's safe, they dash to the garden like mad. But, they can't see me in the screened in patio, so if I'm quiet, the butt stinging commences.

I've been reloading for over 50 years and have never heard of anyone trying to reload 22 rimfire ammo. I've never even seen reloading components for 22 rimfire ammo. But I guess anything is possible?

22lr hoarding ended a while back

Not for everyone. However, I do recall a couple of times over the years that 22 ammo was hard to get for periods of time and prices started going up. I joined the panic buying and bought about 20 bricks at one time. I still buy more today from time to time "to keep up my shelf load" and I do rotate my stock. Some of the ammo I shoot today is over 20 years old and still works perfectly.

Hmm, even the lowly Daisy BB (copper BBs) gun will put a hole straight through a full soda can on both sides...so I don't know if it's only stinging the squirrels or much more. Unless you mean airsoft BBs.

Maybe I misunderstood as I know nothing about reloading ammo. Perhaps they were saving the shells to bring them some place for exchange/reloading/reuse?

No problem, you wouldn't know such a thing if you are not into the hobby. If you go to an outdoor shooting range you'll find 10's of thousands (maybe 100's of thousands) of 22 rimfire cases on the ground. Nobody picks them up.

Most people that reload will only reload the "centerfire" ammo that they shoot. And they will pickup their spent cases.

Ah gotcha! yeah, never got into it as a hobby. I just have a .357 for home/camping defense and use .38 spcl ammo in it for practice once or twice a yr.

Actually, during the shortage someone came up with a rimfire reloading kit. From what I heard, it was slow, hazardous, and producing subpar ammunition. I don't imagine anyone bothers now that you can readily buy the stuff.

Personally, the shortage got me off my duff to start reloading. If 22 rimfire becomes unobtanium for long enough that I am in anger of running out, 38 special is pretty cheap to load and shoot.

For my pistols, I load 38's, 44's and 45's since my loads are much better than what I can buy. Much better accuracy, lots of bullet and powder selections and I can crank them up or slow them down like I want. However, I draw the line at loading 9mm's. They are cheap enough to buy factory loads and I never particularly like that cartridge anyway.

I have the most fun doing this with 30-06. Full house loads for elk hunting, midrange for deer (like a 30-30 with a bigger slug), popgun stuff for small game and plinking. A 118 grain gas checked bullet doing 1600 FPS is tons of fun out my elk rifle.

Actually do the first two pretty well. Haven't been a gun guy. Nothing against them, just haven't ventured into that. DW might have a fit if I did so I try and keep the peace. I do have a Remington pump for intruders and a scoped pellet rifle to take care of the flickers that peck on the metal on my house.

Every fathers day I take the ole man. It always surprises me how well some of the other shooters are doing. Sometimes I bring the 30-6 and fire off a few rounds just to see who is awake. Otherwise CnC Beretta M9.

My venture into target shooting is like a hobby I had about 15 years ago.. saltwater aquariums. Talk about an expensive hobby! I enjoyed not only the biology and beauty but also the chemistry and mechanics involved. Pumps, protein skimmers, UV system and the saltwater balance of the right elements. I even had 'live rock' air freighted over from the Philippines as part of a group buy. I gave it up after a particularly nasty algae bloom and the rising expense of the animals.

My foray into golf, guitars and guns all have a similar component that hooked me... simple math. I'm a math moron, but the science involved in each hobby is a simple to understand but hard to master. It's fascinating to note the mathematical patterns and elements that Mother Nature weaves into everything.

Finally, at my older age, math is fun.

Yep, big gun nut here. Up until last year I shot Bullseye with a Buckmark. Now I use it for speed steel. I use Glocks for shooting USPSA, IDPA and hope to get into 3 gun pretty soon. Need more experience with a shotgun and rifle first though.

I do some shooting and hunting and recently have actually been thinking of .22's but I feel like I'm in the minority when I say that I find .22lr rifle in particular to be boring. I grew up shooting them and occasionally shoot them now, but after 10 shots I get pretty bored. I like the extra bit of kick, even from a .223 or something and punching paper at 100yds gets boring too after a little. I like stretching it out further or plinking steel. Though come to think of it, I haven't plinked steel at short ranges with .22lr, so maybe that'll be worth a try.
