Greatest hate songs ever

Much of Roger Waters' songwriting creativity is driven by bitterness. "Money" is perhaps the earliest such track.

that reminds me... Phil Collins during his divorce years.
Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin,
I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies

Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?
To the lepers in your head
Well, did I ask too much, more than a lot?
You gave me nothing, now it's all I got.

The song I think of is ‘One’ by U2. I read an article in which Bono said fans have told him they played the song at their wedding, and he always wonders: "Did you ever hear the lyrics?!”

From Metallica's song "Sad But True:"

"Hate (hate)
I'm your hate
I'm your hate when you want love
Pay (pay)
Pay the price
Pay, for nothing's fair
Hey (hey)
I'm your life
I'm the one who took you there
Hey (hey)
I'm your life
And I no longer care"

Lumpy

I don't know if it rises to hate, but the lyrics to the Four Seasons' "Tell It To The Rain" certainly rise to "I don't give a %$#!" I especially liked the line "Baby don't say you're sorry 'coz I'm just not concerned."

Probably a little too heavy metal / hard rock for some, but one of my favorites is Ænema by Tool. Essentially a hate anthem directed at the vacuous, materialistic LA/Hollywood lifestyle.

Fret for your figure and fret for your latte and
Fret for your lawsuit and fret for your hairpiece and
Fret for your Prozac and fret for your pilot and
Fret for your contract and fret for your car
It's a bullsh*t three ring circus sideshow

Interestingly, this song won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1998.

I Hate Everything

George Strait

He was sitting there beside me throwing doubles down
When he ordered up his third one he looked around
Then he looked at me
And said, "I do believe
I'll have one more."
He said, "I hate this bar and I hate to drink,
But on second thought, tonight I think, I hate everything."

Then he opened up his billfold and threw a twenty down,
And a faded photograph fell out and hit the ground.
I picked it up,
He said, "thank you, bud."
I put it in his hand.
He said, "I probably oughta throw this one away
'cause she's the reason I feel this way.
I hate everything."

I hate my job
And I hate my life
And if it weren't for my two kids
I'd hate my ex wife.
I know I should move on and try to start again,
But I just can't get over her leaving me for him.
Then he shook his head, looked down at his ring, said, "I hate everything."

Said, "that one bedroom apartment where I get my mail,
Is really not a home, it's more like a jail,
With a swimming pool, and a parking lot view.
Man, it's just great.
I hate summer, winter, fall and spring.
Red and yellow, purple, blue and green.
I hate everything."

So I pulled out my phone and I called my house.
I said, "Babe, I'm coming home, we're gonna work this out."
I payed for his drinks
And I told him thanks
Thanks for everything.

In an ironic title, the song, "I love it" by Icona Pop is a pretty hateful song based on its lyrics, not title.

"Forget You" by Cee-Lo Green ranks high on the list. Especially the uncensored version that has a different title.

Wow!... Back to my college fraternity days from 1954 to 1958. Bowdoin was an all male school back in those days, much hard work, but party weekends broke the grind. Girls would come from all over... Bates, Colby, Boston College (my jeanie), Maine, Skidmore, and just about every school within 500 miles.
About 35 guys and almost as many girls.

Very great Frat... Chi Psi... and all gentlemen. To greet any new girlfriend or date, it was a time honored tradition for all the men to get together and sing this lovely song.. to honor the new young lady.

You're so ugly, you're so ugly
you're some ugly child
Now the clothes you wear are out of style
You look like an ape every time you try to smile
How I hate you, you alligator bait, you
The ugliest thing I ever saw
Oh, You're knock kneed, pigeon toed, and box ankled too
There's a curse on your family & it fell on you
Your teeth are yellow, who's your fellow
You're some ugly child

The lyrics start @ 1 minute in...

Hurt is kind of a self-hate song. Apologies to NIN fans, but Johnny Cash's version is superior, with an excellent video.

Nazareth - Hair of the Dog. "Now you're messin' with a Son of a Bitch"

Ah yeah. Saw the band live in Madison back in '77. Wore that album cover tee shirt to my part time job sweeping floors. The store manager caught me , sent me home and told me to never wear that shirt in the store again.

Not sure if he meant just that store or all Woolworths

Don't Ask Me Why by Eurythmics

Miracle of miracles
Look what the night dragged in
It's a pocket full of misery
And trouble on the wind
You spoiled the best years
Of your life
You took them all in vain
Now you think that you're forgiven
But you can't be born again

And you say why
You say why
You say why
Don't ask me why
I don't love you anymore
I don't think I ever did
And if you ever had
Any kind of love for me
You kept it all so well hid

Promises sweet promises
You kept them from your mind
Like all the lost forgotten things
You never seemed to find
Like all the disappointments
You displayed upon your shelf
Now you've got no one to turn to
You've got no one but yourself
And you say why

I like this song by Pink Floyd. My wife doesn't. She says leaving them kids alone is what causes juvenile delinquency. :)

Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd

We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!
All in all it's just another brick in the wall.
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.

You Oughta Know by Alanis Morisette is a definite contender for this.

Another great contender is How Do You Sleep from John Lennon's Imagine album. Supposedly about Paul McCartney but later denied by Lennon. A real hard driving song regardless of who is about.
