We need health insurance on the open market for January 2019, and from February 2019-on, will have retiree health care. We live in Washington state, which evidently does not have short term health plans. We currently have health care through the Washington exchange. Do we just continue a 2019 plan, and cancel it after one month?

Has anybody had this issue, and found a optimal way to get past the short term insurance issue?

Note, the option to not have insurance for the one month is off the table. Insurance Russian roullette is not for me.

Enroll in an ACA policy effective Jan 1, then cancel it effective Feb 1. You have no obligation to keep the policy after the first month.
