Another thing I recalled, was that security software (like Norton) could block wifi networks. You just have to get in there and see what's available.

Also, there were definitely windows updates that broke network discovery. It gets complicated, but there are MS pages on this.

I am not as familiar with these things as I once was, but I know it can be frustrating. On the road, in a cafe, it probably gives one heartburn.
