Interesting. Where I grew up the first day of hunting season was a holiday, for everyone, no school, no non-emergency stated government, many businesses. The school even let students out for a week of excused absences if they brought a form from their parents saying they were going hunting. And I too received a pistol, except mine was a Ruger, for my birthday form my wife.

What I find interesting is we have such a common background, yet we are so far apart in our opinions.

I find it interesting too. Also, I think we tend not to get as angry at others whose opinions differ from our own if we at least have some understanding of who they are and why they think the way they think, even if we disagree with them. I have appreciated your sharing of your backround in other threads. I might be more understanding of Charles if I knew him better.

:D

Probably not. Most of the women who have given me guns don't visit this forum :D.

A while back I converted the .40 cal. S&W Glock to a smaller 9mm. DW had problems controlling it during rapid fire drills. In the interest of creating a weapon harmony/compatibility within the marriage, I switched. :)

Dantien, I was going to delete my shoot at each other post. I was feeling guilt over my upbringing which would have resulting in the permanent loss of your gun if it ever, but ever, even accidently, was pointed at another person. :-[

Go ahead and delete away....but enjoy your humor though!

Re: When I Look Upon Pelosi & Reid I Get......

... I think instead of saying that conservatives are bad, libertarians are bad, socialists are bad, or liberals are bad, is that we would get a whole lot further by talking about particular proposals or problems and try to weigh dispassionately the upside and the downside of regulation.
Right on, Martha. Thanks for working to keep the debate civil, instead of the sophomoric name calling which appears now common here.

And, a little humor is welcome ... ;)

Re: When I Look Upon Pelosi & Reid I Get......

wow, this is some thread.

I just have a couple of points to add, but would prefer to decline calling other posters names, if that's ok with everyone.

First, to me it is irrelevant whether or not the government is actually listening in on me. The fact that they have given themselves the power to do so, as well as to detain me indefinitely without charge, representation etc. tells me that all these so-called "strict constitutionalist" conservatives don't care one bit about the constitution. All they care about is absolute power.

However, my real anger is at both the dems, for not putting up more of a fuss and for not filibustering this very dangerous power grab, and at the American people, for not bothering to understand and care about the real implications of this change.

Much as I believe that Bush has committed impeachable offenses, (and probably could be tried as a war criminal in the Hague if the US had the balls to submit to international justice instead of it's cowardly position on the matter), I have more modest goals for the dems....

I think they can make Bush and the Repubs look very bad if they play their cards right. Act like they are cooperating. Don't behave like mean junkyard dog Repubs. Then....about September of 2008, have a minimum wage bill plus massive repeal of the tax cuts for the wealthy. Keep the tax cuts for the middle class. Take away the presidential right to torture. Push environmental global-warming bills. Hit Bushes desk with reasonable bills and force him to veto them just in time for the election. Then blame all Repubs when they refuse to help override the vetos.

the knife that "kills kindly" as Nietzsche put it....

Maybe "liberals" like Martha see life in better terms than "conservatives" like JG do, because liberals have better lives themselves. The selfishness of conservatives tends to bring them down . . .

Really? Most of the anger I see on heree is from liberals........ ;)

Re: When I Look Upon Pelosi & Reid I Get......

Yep

I guess we don't fully understand we won the election. BTW - when I grew up the Scandinavian socialists were the liberals, the Democrats were the conservatives - they only penciled in a number for the Republicans - until the durn civil rights movement hit.

Used to be a joke - one couldn't get on the Washington State ballot without a name ending in -son.

That reminds me - I need a new shotgun - mine went in Katrina. Nothing like a Democrat with a gun in a winning election year - ARMED with a gen-u-ine Curmudgeon certificate.

heh heh heh heh heh - actually I haven't read all of this thread - but thought to post - to keep my count up.

Sorry didn't read the entire thread either. Just sooo happy for the change. Bi-partisanship? Rather not. No not a demo nor repub. Just glad for the change, long overdue!

I'd hurry up if you want one. We now have a democratic congress so your gun purchasing time will soon be running out.

Does Tanqeray and tonic count as a cold one? That would be sweet........... :D

Re: When I Look Upon Pelosi & Reid I Get......

I have not problems with the viewpoints of others... unless of course they start to tell me how I am wrong and stupid or something else like that...

I am 'liberal' to the neo-cons and 'conservative' to the leftist....

I don't care about the guns... I think I have a .22 rifle somewhere in the house... it was my father's, but might have given it to my BIL... he has many guns... but, it is in the constitution and don't mess with that...

I also agree that they have been abusing thier poweres... have been torturing people, been listening illegally, etc. etc... but, nobody seems to be doing much about it.... so I DO hope the dems dig in and stop it now...

But, PLEASE do not go on a spending spree... like I had said once, spend only the revenue earned.... not more... and you can spend it on those programs you like... but please not more... and if the repubs get back in.. they can stop spending on your junk and spend on THEIR junk... but PLEASE not more than what comes in...

well, so far in the last quarter century only one president has done as you asked. And he was a democrat.

This is why all the comments about the free-spending democrats are so misguided. But that 's the usual right-wing tactic--Repeat the same disinformation enough times, people believe it regardless of whether or not it's true (I'm not talking about you here, Texas Proud).

democrats are whimps, and I fault them for not standing up to the republican lie machine. I fault them for going along with Bush's insane agenda out of fear of the political consequences. I fault them for for not defending the constitution against the assault. I fault them for not standing up to Bush's hypocritical bashing about judicial appointments after putting up with the Ashcroft-led total refusal to confirm any appointments in the last 2 years of Clinton's presidency.

But it's simply not fair to criticize them for being fiscally irresponsible when they are the only one that have shown any semblance of fiscal restraint in decades. Not that I trust them that much either, but it seems unfair to criticize the dems of today for what Lyndon Johnson did.

Re: When I Look Upon Pelosi & Reid I Get......

Technocracy, anyone?
Seriously, we can do a lot better than a bloated system that feeds itself money in order to maintain its own survival, feeding on our hopes that we are being offered a serious choice that might actually make a difference in our actual lives. Corporations are taking over the world. The average American is exposed to 20000 advertisements in a single day. Consciously or not we are all playing the game of buying into the game of branding and corporate identity... and these same corporations will leave our children to foot the bill when the ecological and humanitarian damage assessment comes rolling around in about half a century.

Never said anything about socialist scandinavian..... but, why make ME pay for YOUR recycling.... and if it is a good thing (which I will not argue... I think it is a good thing) then it SHOULD PAY FOR ITSELF...

And taking a look around the neighborhood... not many people put their bin out yesterday... maybe 10 to 15%... so, in real dollar terms it cost $30 per household who recycles....

But, as I said, this was just an example of how 'liberals' want to govern..

Recycling DOES pay for itself. The city in which I live makes money from AL, cardboard, and paper recycling (shipped to China). It loses money recycling glass and plastic but, overall, it's PROFITABLE.

That doesn't even include the money saved from less dump space.

Edit: I should've written that recycling can pay for itself. It doesn't always.

I tend to agree with that statement, however many of the costs are hidden, so it's hard sometimes to compare.

Here's an example (and I'm not saying this is all fact, it is more to illustrate the point):

A: If coal fired plants emit mercury, and
B: that mercury causes health problems, and
C: the coal burners are not paying the health costs

then the true cost of burning coal is not captured in the commodity price of coal.

For reasons like that, I tend to side with the environment, even if it costs a bit more. But, it can be overdone from both sides. It is a tough call sometimes.
