Dead at age 91.

Surprised nobody's posted yet. Sondheim was the greatest American lyricist and composer for musical theater.

He composed the lyrics for "West Side Story" when he was in his 20's. That, and "Send In The Clowns," are the works for which he is best known.

My favorite is the thinly disguised Greek tragedy, "Sweeney Todd."

It took me a while to learn to appreciate his work. I didn't like everything he wrote; he didn't strive for popularity, some of his musicals flopped immediately, and some just plain escape me, although my husband loves them ("Passion," for example).

Anyway, I'm glad that near the end of his life he got to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom as well as marry his longtime companion. https://musicaltheatrereview.com/sondheim-at-90-a-youtube-career-retrospective/

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is my favorite, esp the the movie version with Zero Mostel.
