Although we were primarily a Linux place where I worked, there was a need for Windows. The IT guys pointed me to Microsoft Security Essentials, a free download which I have no idea why it is not bundled in with the OS, but it is far more lightweight than the more widely used (and purchased) anti-virus suites.

Where I used to work, our group started using this MSE after the commercial s/w failed to detect a virus but which MSE caught. And I also installed it at home to replace the anti-virus s/w that came with Comcast. I noticed too that the PC's start up faster.
