Thinking of DCA'ing into a Vanguard Investor Fund, but I see the Admiral fund is cheaper but requires a $50k buy-in.

Does anyone know if Vanguard will automatically "upgrade" my Investor fund to Admiral once my contributions cross $50k? Also, how quickly would they do that switch?

(I could afford the $50k buy-in now, but I know I'll hate it if the price goes down afterward; hence wanting to DCA.)

Thanks.

Generally yes. They do it on a "lazy" basis, so it'd probably happen within a few months of you hitting the $50k mark. If you want to do it sooner, you can just log into your account and press the "convert now" button. Very easy and seamless.

Generally speaking the upgrade is also not a taxable event.

From what I see... NO... they will not transfer your shares to Admiral...

However, they will show a link at the top of your account saying you qualify and all you have to do is click the link...

Now, they WILL downgrade you after awhile if you go the other way...

FYI, I am speaking from experience... both ways...

I had shares automatically moved from investor to admiral a few years ago. The only thing I notice is that cost basis was lost. But these were in an IRA (Roth) so it doesn’t matter.
