What I am curious about is where most people have settled down. Having lived everywhere I don't really have a place I call home. Most of this is courtesy of the USAF and rather soon I will need to find a permanent place for my daughter.

Fresno, Ca
Sacramento, Ca
Stockton, Ca
Long Beach, Ca
...and now I will never return to California...
San Antonia, Texas
Spokane, Washington
Pensacola, Florida
Warner Robins, Georgia
Geilenkirchen, Germany
Warner Robins, Georgia
Mildenhall, UK (current)

Massachusetts - Norfolk County
Missouri - St. Louis County
Massachusetts - Worcester County
Missouri - St. Louis County
Missouri - St. Charles County

Pretty mundane compared to most of the posts so far.

You can find a number of websites that talk about how military friendly a state is. Exempting retirement pay from state tax (or not even having a state tax) can be a significant factor.

I was the same as you, but when I retired the decision was easy because most of DW's friends were from the area where she grew up and I discovered I liked it well enough to settle down there.

Depending on how old your daughter is, how important is it really to find a permanent home right away?

WI-3x's, TX-once, KS-twice, Upstate NY-once and Nevada now. I thought I moved a lot (about 30 times total) but it looks like a lot of people here have moved a lot.

Some posters here moved around a lot. I love to travel, but not so much about moving.

I have lived in only two large metropolitan areas in my life. The current one, I have been living in for 40+ years, in 3 different homes.

My children also do not like to move. They have lived here all their life. When they graduated from the local university, never did bother to look for work outside of the city. They both ended up finding work within 10 miles of my home, where they grew up.

I guess I should have included that too.

Spent some time underwater in the Atlantic too. Good Story for Cards fan. I pulled in port in Barbados and had to stay on the boat for two of those days.
standing watch, I open the door to the control room and there's Ozzie Smith,Willie Mcgee, Danny Cox and John Tudor. They were on a cruise ship.

Spent a lot of time at Scott AFB and became a huge Cards fan. I used to live at 9th and Pine downtown St Louis.

Seattle, WA
Willamette Valley, OR
Portland, OR and a suburb

Moved back to Seattle three times, Oregon again and Boise twice

Blacksburg, VA (go Hokies!)
Gaithersburg, MD
Jackson, MS
Vidalia, GA
Birmingham, AL
Little Rock, AR
Granbury, TX

Richmond, VA
Back to my roots in SW VA

Doesn't count extended business trips to Vicksburg, MS; Russelville, AR; Crystal River, FL; Oak Ridge, TN

I like living near the coast.

Los Angeles, CA
Saratoga, CA
Monterey, CA
Fort Meade, MD
Santa Barbara, CA
Redwood City, CA
Sunnyvale, CA
Brookdale, CA

I seem to be doing a big loop around the southeast/southwest US (clockwise though ... this is NASCAR country so I'm doing it wrong):

Albuquerque, NM (born & raised)
Las Cruces, NM
Los Alamos, NM
Colorado Springs, CO
Augusta, GA
Dallas (metro), TX
by 2018 back to New Mexico for good

Americans seem to move more than most (in general). I think that fluidity of people capital is a real plus for our economy.
