Update to my post in May 2015, but first another thank you to everyone that provided feedback and comments. A lot of good info!

So, after a lot of consideration about staying for another few years on active duty, I decided to retire Nov 2016. Retirement paperwork submitted; pending approval. I will finish with 26.1 years of active duty service, retiring as an 06/Colonel....very humbled to have made it this far and worked with a lot of great servicemen and woman from all branches of the military. They still need your support; operational tempo is only increasing and the less than 1 percent serving deserve our support for all the challenges they will continue to meet in the years ahead.

My updates include:
-Future primary house in Colorado Springs purchased & rented until smr 2016. (Great house & an awesome location near trails, creek and a lot of open space.)
-Completed senior military transition course....Yes, Nords, a lot of great info! Definitely wish I would have completed a little sooner, but still feel like everything is doable in my timeframe of 2016.
-Still adjusting the transition budget; updated current and future budgets to reflect information learned in transition course, etc....
-Transferred Roth IRA's to Vanguard and adjusted TSP AA.
-We are still planning to sell our house in San Diego next summer.

I am still weighing the options of full on retirement versus bridge career versus part time avocation for a little extra money. It is hard to decide at this point; I am still processing the idea of not working at all, but I am thinking about it a lot and have some more time to work through my options.

Our savings and projected COLA pension will meet our expenses in Colorado Springs, but I have a hard time slowing down, so I am prepared to work through the process to determine if I can really slow down and embrace retirement or need some kind of encore career to keep me and the family happy. Most likely will take a long break; understanding the employment risk....and evaluate my options after I adjust to life after the military. Currently, I have been on active duty longer than anything else in my life....so not sure I am capable of making real "objective" decisions at this point.

Best to all and thanks again for all the feedback on my original post about retiring.

The countdown to 1 Nov 2016 has begun.....although, I will transition to retirement leave on/about late July 2016.....so roughly, 286 days until we begin our drive to Colorado.

Attached a picture of the creek and view down the street from our house in Colorado....can hear the water from our deck and in the house when the windows are open. Yes, creek is a little high at the time of picture due to rain....and fortunately, we are not in a flood plain.:)

Congrats, sir! I'm envious and looking forward to making this same post in a few years! Best of luck from a fellow San Diegan!

Congrats! You've earned some time to relax and decide what your next stage is going to be like - no need to rush any decisions.

Congrats! Keep us updated as you enjoy your countdown. Looks like you have a great plan with still a few options re: how you want to spend your time which is not a bad problem to have!

Congrats...it's great being a part of the blue card mafia. I have been 'officially' retired since 31 Dec '14 but started terminal leave in late October. This past year has been BY FAR the best year of my life!!! The only real regret was that I didn't do it sooner!

Looking back, the time from pulling the trigger (July) to starting terminal (Oct) really FLEW by. I'm glad it did because at the time I pulled the trigger, by BS meter was pegged.

Oh yes, and not sure if you are AF or not, but this is a good time to get out since they are playing the stop-loss games again. :(

Thanks for the positive comments....I expect the time to pass quickly in some ways and real slow in others. Fortunately, I work with some really great leaders, so work is still good, but I am doubtful this would continue if I stayed for another tour and relocated to another higher headquarters staff job.

I have also started to feel the accumulated wear and tear. I am still keeping up with the young ones, but the aches and pains last a lot longer than in the past.

I will be checking back in and hopefully providing some motivation for others.

Semper Fi!

Epic,

Punched 2 years ago from the Corps after 23. DW punched a year prior after 21. I jumped right into a contractor job. Double dipped for a month. Wrong job, wrong team. After 1.5 years ER'd for 8 months. Busy but needed the mental challenge after about 4-5 months. Came back to a different contract job and I am loving it. Great team and love my area of concern (aviation). DW is still only 43 so our biggest challenge is her understanding of ER. She is currently a GS working on stuff she loves. IRS is our biggest head ache. We ended up keeping our San Diego house and are doing well on the rental market. We bought our dream (small) retirement house out here on Chesapeake Bay. So I guess I am no longer FIRE. Just FI. Probably work for 2-5 years. 2 min to get company fully vested 401K match. Good luck. Semper gumby applies to ER too.

Big Dawg out

Congratulations! Take it slow, enjoy time with family, and see how you feel in a few months.

I think you'll have no problem figuring out what you want to do all day...

Congrats EpicRider!
Really enjoyed your post and am very excited for you and your family!
I'm a few years behind you - at 27, holding out for 30....good job, great team, beautiful historic military housing. Had planned on hanging it up this past August, but find myself enjoying it to much to retire.

I second this.

Congrats! Retired last year.I do not miss the job but miss the people. I had 90 days to report back to civilian job. Too short. Your retirement check and tricare will give you a lot of flexibility.

AF claims its not a real change (i.e. codifying existing rulles/policies), but definitely something to keep in mind.

I'm looking at pulling the plug in the next 24 months (mid'16 to mid/late '17). I'm already over 20, but have ADSC until mid '16. Definitely tempted to put it in sooner rather than later in order to 'lock it in'.

Anyway, congrats to EpicRider

Stop loss for what?

JQP can sum it up much better than I can. He has some "updated" info as well.

Air Force Quietly Implements "Stop Loss" Provision to Fill Deployments - John Q. Public

In summary: "AFPC is now relying on statutory authority designed for states of emergency and large-scale hostilities to retain airmen beyond retirement eligibility as a matter of convenience. It’s evident the service cut too many airmen while refusing to audit needlessly bloated deployment rosters. Now, having never created a forecast or yearly plan for deployment requirements in order to give airmen predictability or foster commander-driven stability measures, it is falling back inappropriately on special legal authority intended for sparing use as yet another stop-gap measure, attempting to mask gross personnel mismanagement in the process..."

The link isn't working for me, but be careful of trusting JQP. He likes to indulge in a bit of hyperbole. I can't tell if his updates changed the tone of this article, but when he originally posted it he implied that personnelists were REQUIRED to enforce stop-loss. Not true. The change merely clarified when it could be used.

Thanks for update. Have not seen anything from MOAA or ROA.
