Could I retire if I had to?

Long time lurker outing himself due to changing circumstances. :)

I'm 44 years old and have been working towards FIRE before I even knew it was called FIRE. I work hard, but, frankly... I really don't want to work.
Anyone can retire if they truly have to. There is no choice. But at many asset levels, one is better off downshifting his or her requirements in a job and just get some money.

Do you have specific knowledge/experience with the program that leads you to want to keep your kids off CHIP? Because in some states these programs are excellent, especially if you are in a large urban area with a good supply of drs./hospitals. Here in Washington State our Apple Health program is excellent, at least for those of us in Seattle.

I would encourage you to at least try the program in your state, unless you have very specific information/reason not to (e.g. complicated medical conditions that need access to specialists who don't accept the program, etc.). If you decide you don't like it then you can do some larger Roth conversions to get your "income" back up to the ACA minimums.

I'm surprised the majority of the response has been to NOT retire..
The OP said he has about 1 mil in assets, PLUS he has a paid off home, so that also adds to it. Yes he needs a place to live, but what about moving to a cheaper area? I think if someone wants to retire way early, they need to make some life changes.. even moving if needed. That's my plan, moving overseas.
