Stock Picking (Beat Boho) Contest - V2.0

MonitorLizzy hasn't made a trade since joining in January 2018 and she's still there.

Not good. Folks disappeared like a B-horror movie  .

Hope just a glitch.

I will say, this "game" has helped me personally by showing it is not easy to beat the market. Even the few people that have beaten the market have attributed it partially to luck. Nunnun invested 1 hour of brain power and was still #7 overall. I call that a win in my book. Boy I am glad I am just using a standard buy and hold strategy for my real investments.

Maybe I'll start posting one of these charts every month.

It's been a year or so since I last logged in....I'm glad to see that I'm doing ok by doing absolutely nothing. That's also what I have been doing in real life since I retired 5 years ago. I have just been reinvesting my dividends and I've even stopped rebalancing.

Did we find out why folks are getting dropped from the contest? Was it due to inactivity?

I'm not sure but that's probably it. I was surprised to see neither Fermion traded in longer than the approximately 1-1/2 years that it takes to be removed from the game. I wonder if any of the deleted players got an email warning.

Thanks. Was curious. I hardly trade but did so within a year.

Contest began just over 2 years ago.

Well, 3/29/17 to be more precise.

Was the day they got dropped the anniversary of when the game started?

No, the game was started around March 29. It's possible this is a new feature of the game so maybe some players got to play longer than is currently allowed, making it harder to tell how long you could be inactive at this point.

It's been a long time since I ran my scraper, since I gave up on this buggy simulator, but here's the last trade for the players as of, eh, whenever I last ran.

No warning for me.

Based on the last trade date list, it does appear to be due to inactivity. Whether it is trade activity or logon activity is not certain.

I made 100s of trades since december,
Guessing you ran that in december

I guess ransil has the most trades now.

Total Transactions:

ransil: 478
BohoII: 282

Maybe, maybe not. Like practically everything else in the game, the statistics of transaction volume are hopelessly inaccurate. If you check your transaction history, you will see that all of your trades from 2017 have disappeared. The first trade of yours that the game has a record of is dated 1/2/18.

That's why your trade history may be accurate, but Boho's is hopelessly wrong. You may not have been affected by the purge of trade history from 2017, but Boho definitely was. The game thinks he started trading early in 2018, but of course he made countless trades in 2017 that have now disappeared.

Interesting, wasn't 2017 some of Boho's worse trades?

Sure, Boho made a lot of silly trades early in the game, but to his credit he learned from his mistakes and has been playing better lately.

As far as I can tell, the people most affected by the purge of trade history are not frequent traders like Boho, but the long term buy and holders like Nunnun. I have been participating in this game under the handle "DieWurst". I made all of my purchases early, except to check in quarterly to reinvest dividends. I found out about the purge of trade history in late March or early April, 2019, when I logged in to reinvest dividends - I found out that I had received only a small fraction of what I was entitled to. When I investigated, I found I had been credited with dividends not on all of my shares, but only on the shares I purchased in 2018, and that there was no longer any record of my having made any purchases in 2017. I checked all the other game participants, and nobody else had any trade history from 2017 either.

So the symptoms I saw was that anyone who bought shares in 2017 is no longer receiving dividends on their purchases. It definitely affected me, and I suspect also affected all others using a long term buy and hold approach.

Naturally, getting shortchanged in dividends is not so dramatic as the catastrophic effect of purging active game participants, but the root cause seems similar - in both cases Investopedia appears to have made purges without first checking to see if the purge would affect a game that's still in progress.

....

I'm just joshing as I like to razz Boho .

As for the accuracy of the contest, that's another matter as there my come a time (if we aren't already there), where we can't really draw any conclusion from the results :(.

The run date is probably near the last trade date of December 14.

The purpose of the simulation is to get people to buy courses they're selling, so long term accuracy isn't a priority. I've tried documening bugs and bringing those forward, but got ignored.

If anyone really cares, I've got trades from inception to December 14.
