Iceland rental car?

Spending a week in Iceland this summer and will be needing a car for at least 3-4 days. Does anyone have a recommendation for a rental car company (either a good or a bad report would be helpful).

I know it will be very expensive and I've read a few horror stories about the costs of damage to the car and the extra insurance you need for that, but any suggestions will be most welcome.

We booked with Budget and I don't remember anything particularly unusual about it. By the time we got to Iceland we'd been in Norway for a couple of weeks, so we were beyond the point where high prices shocked us.

I do remember that fees varied depending on what roads you drive. Gravel roads require extra insurance I think and some roads require 4WD cars. So you'll have to know your plans to a degree in order to have the right car and insurance.

Thanks, the article has alerted me to things I never would have known, like F roads (I have my own view of what the F stands for if you drive on them )

And that they consider it normal to have rivers to cross without bridges. Do they get drought times there, as that is when I'd like to cross them.
