It's my wife who immediately clicked off the reservation Web screen when she saw the cost of $35/seat/flight leg. 
In the past, on international flights with the seat arrangement of typical the 2/4/2 configuration of twin-aisle jets, we would take the 2 outer seats (windows+aisle). This time, we are on a widebody with the 3/4/3 configuration, so will have a neighbor no matter what.
Anyway, the airline said if we did not reserve, it would try to assign seats so that travel companions stay together. We shall see.
