Where to buy stocks?

Could you recommend a deep discount online broker through which I could buy individual stocks? This would be for an IRA.

Have some friends who use scottrade. I use vanguard brokerage, linked to my ira, but I am an infrequent trader and vanguard fees are not in the discount rate mode. V, Do not consider this an endorsement for either one . Possibly some online traders will jump in.

WellsFargo gives you free trades if you have $250K invested with them. Otherwise it's $2.95 if you have $100K with them. TDAmeritrade charges $9.95

Avoid sharebuilder with the $4 buys one day a week.

I'll second for Scottrade. They've always been good to DW & I, even when our accounts were very small - no "maintenance" fees, $7 trades regardless of account size, and friendly help (in person) from the local brokerage office when we needed help dealing with some paper stock certificates.

I've been very happy with Schwab ven though the commissions are slightly higher. If you are buying more than a few thousand dollars of stock at a time it is a wash, mostly.

I think that we have talked about them before and for larger buys, you probably dont get the best price. They have fees on their iras, also. They seem to be ok if you want to do some taxable investing in smaller amounts...and they do give out a lot of new account signup bonuses for accounts.

Not for the fainthearted though. No handholding whatsoever.

Thanks for the links, those are really cheap. You're right about no hand-holding though, this will be my first time buying stocks so I'll have to make sure I know what I'm doing before opening an account.
