Please include ALL spending, exclusive of payroll income taxes (federal income, state income, social security, and medicare taxes), and exclusive of savings. It doesn't matter what you spent it on (mortgage, entertainment, utilities, travel, education, cars, wine, women, song), all spending counts.
As a hypothetical, if you earned 100k last year, and your total payroll income taxes were $20k, and you saved $15k, then you spent $65k, regardless of where the 65k went.
And yes, the question is meant for individuals and couples alike.
