I've wanted to go to Cartagena ever since I saw Romancing the Stone in the 80's. Closest I've gotten is Panama.

Interesting! Of the 36 places listed, I have visited three: Recoleta Cemetery, San Miguel de Bariloche, and Sainte Chappelle. I agree that all are worth a visit.

Offhand I found I could come up with at least 20 interesting and underrated destinations. Here are just a few:

Temple of Buddha, Shanghai, China

Fishing villages on the Yellow Sea, Liaoning Province, China
Newgrange, Co. Meath, Ireland
Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland
National Gallery, Dublin, Ireland
Iguassu Falls (Brazil and Argentininan sides)
Mineral Park (Brazilian side of Iguassu Falls)
Signal Hill, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
#4 Dredge, Dawson City, Yukon, Canada
Crypts under the Capuchin Church, Via Veneto, Rome, Italy
Domme, Perigord, France
Brown Cafes, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Museum of Sex, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A wonderful site, overshadowed by Machu Picchu, but splendid in its own right. The Peruvian government may be trying to raise its profile. The train to Machu Picchu no longer originates in Cusco. You have to take a bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo and catch the train there.

Yup. North end of Clear lake, just past Lucerne. Got it's own Indian Casino and everything. It's an interesting little place. The Clear Lake area is nice, as long as there's no algae bloom or fish kill. Quiet, except for the meth users.

Thanks, IndependentlyPoor, I really enjoyed the slides but I don’t get it. If you live in L.A. and subscribe to the “L.A. Times,” why would you need to leave the city limits to find under-rated destinations?
