I ran across an article on a company called "MoviePass" (www.moviepass.com) which charges $9.95 per month for the right to visit a local movie theater once a day and watch a movie. From what I read most of the local theaters do participate in the program and there are very few limitations on which movies you can see.

This seems like it may be too good to be true, but there are enough articles from people who have used it and said it's legitimate. Has anyone tried it, or is anyone willing to commit to $9.95 and let us know if it works?

Dude.

10 bucks and you want someone else to try it before you do?

I have not looked at it, but it sounds good...

Do you have to sign up for any length of time?

When I was in the UK a theater chain offered this as an option.... I took it... but it was just the one chain... still, it offered all of them...

There were times when I would go to 3 or 4 movies in a week... I could walk to one of the theaters from my apt... a second was one stop on the tube and either a 15 minute walk or a bus ride... another was a few stops with a transfer, but it was a good theater....

I could buy a new pass every month.... so there were times I would skip a few weeks so new movies could come out and I would start over...

I do not remember being limited to one a day when I started... I think it did change when I was leaving...

I'm finding it difficult to get much information because when I try to load the web site it crashes. I'm guessing that a lot of people are trying to look at it and they did not expect so much traffic. I think I read that it was previously $50/month and they just announced the new price of $10/month this week.

Interesting.... I just looked at the theater in London on Google map and they have a sign saying 'Unlimited movies for only 19.99 a month'...

That is in pounds, so $25 ish... still not bad since they charge 12 pounds to watch one movie...

I tried Movie Pass under the old plan on a Groupon special. We had trouble getting one of the cards sent to the right address, so it was kind of a hassle getting that sorted out, because the clock started ticking on the use by date and it took over a month for one of the cards to show up. We had to give them a credit card number even though I paid for the pass through Groupon, which I didn't like, since it implied they would try to keep charging us after the Groupon period ran out. In the end we did get the cards and they did cancel the plan when the Groupon ran out, but it was too much hassle and not much savings for us under the old pricing plan even with the Groupon pricing compared to just going to $5 Tuesdays or the early bird matinee.

I would consider it for the $9.99 a month if we were closer to AMC theaters, but even then I'm not sure if we would use it enough to more than breakeven with a couple of $5 Tuesday movies a month.

AMC's dropping out.

Will other chains stay in?

I read a recent article that it was only AMC theaters for the new $9.99 plan. That have been incorrect. If our local chains are still a part of it, I will still consider rejoining.

I can't find any way on the web site or the app to identify which local movie theaters are participating. It appears the only way to find out is to sign up and give them all of your personal information. Has anyone found a way around this?

Yes, I saw that in the FAQ's, but good luck trying to figure out how to do that.

"ALL your personal info", really?

SSN?
Ethnicity?
Sexual orientation?
Political affiliation?

You are right I did not find a chat feature but I did see a submit a request option on their Zendesk:

https://moviepass.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

And they have an email address for support here:

https://www.moviepass.com/content/contact

I used the support email address for help when I was a member and someone did respond to every email I sent them, though they are probably getting slammed with questions right now because of the price drop.

The other 9% must all be in Orlando as no theaters are listed and customer service doesn't reply.

Another option is (supposedly) coming: https://moviepass.zendesk.com/hc/en...-know-if-MoviePass-supports-my-local-theater-

Simply enter your desired zip code in the app and a list of supported locations in that area will appear! For those who do not have access to the app, we are working to make a list of theaters more accessible. Stay tuned for updates.

I'll wait until they have the participating theaters listed before giving them any information. It's an interesting idea though, we'd probably go to a lot more movies if it pans out.

I'm going to put my curmudgeon hat on here and say that I wouldn't buy this pass even if it were $1/month and worked at 100% of theaters. Watching a movie in most theaters these days is like nails on a chalkboard for me. People talking almost nonstop to each other or to the screen; millenials fiddling with their phones every few minutes, even taking calls and having extended conversations during the film; babies crying; folks frequently getting up and shuffling past you on the way to get food or use the restroom; people munching and smacking loudly on their 5 gallon tubs of popcorn and slurping endlessly from their bucket-sized pails of sugary colas... and a thousand other little annoyances. If I want to truly enjoy a movie, watching it at home on my 70-inch flat screen with surround sound is the only way that really works for me. I'm perfectly happy to wait until it's available on HBO or Netflix. :wiseone:

LOL, you need to go at the right time... went with my daughter on Father's day at 10:30 and we were the only two in the theater!!

Have been there a few other times late and usually not that bad... so real early or real late is the way to go.... it will not prevent some idiot doing what you say, but a lot less chance...

Generally that's us too, but I suspect it has a lot to do with WHEN you go. The last movie we went to (The Martian) was on a weekday about 2:00 in the afternoon and we had the entire theater to ourselves. The movie had been out for several weeks by then so the folks who wanted to see it early weren't there. We'd even have been willing to share the theater with one or two other couples as long as they were quiet. And this was in West Virginia, not exactly the cultural center of the country....:D

Hahahaha, yeah I sometimes think about going to see a movie in the early afternoon on a weekday if it's something that I have an urge to see right away and if I just feel like getting out of the house. But I almost never actually go. I guess I'm just one of those people who really prefers to watch movies at home, for many reasons. For example, it's so nice to be able to pause it for however long if I need to go do something else for a few minutes, or to take a quick bathroom break. I honestly don't feel like I'm missing anything important by watching it at home versus in a big movie theater with seats that are far less comfortable, floors that are sticky, and sound levels that are invariably either way too loud or not quite to my liking. Even though I'm "only" 49, I suppose I fall squarely into the curmudgeon camp when it comes to movie watching.

We looked at it, and I think it's a great deal for families, and folks still working, or if I had teenagers this would be a great gift for them. But for us (2), ER'd, when going to a movie on a Tuesday for $6 each anyway, that'd mean we'd have to want to see 2 films per month to break even. (and in the 14 months since we ER'd there was only one film DH insisted on seeing opening day and paying Friday price).

Eh. Even though we go to pretty much every avengers/marvel/dc and a few other things, there hasn't been any month where we even wanted to go more than once, regardless of price. Maybe a pass like this would make us go more often, but when it's another $4 for even a small diet coke (and yes I know I can carry a big purse with a bottled water), it just doesn't work out as well as we'd like.

My husband just got the movie pass. Its seems to good to be true. He pays $10 a month and has already seen three movies this week. We live within walking distance from several participating theatres. He has been buying his ticket (and reserved seat) the morning of the movie. Movies are expensive here. $16 a ticket. Senior prices are over $11. For movie buffs with theatres close by, its seems like a great deal.

Looks like my local theaters don't play. But that's ok......I haven't been to one in over 20 years. Prime and Netflix works for me.

We did buy the $9.99 movies passes. I do think they are a good deal. But we have some other entertainment subscriptions and passes we use more so we decided to cancel Movie Pass. This was really hard to do and I was sorry I ever gave them my credit card number.

I won't bore you with my saga of trying to cancel, but if you haven't already signed up you might want to check out their New York BBB rating (F) and comments. I wish I had before they got a hold of my credit card number:

We also canceled due to privacy concerns. The following talk kind of creeped me out:

"Everyone knew the MoviePass deal is too good to be true — and as is so often the case these days, it turns out you’re not the customer, you’re the product. And in this case they’re not even attempting to camouflage that. Mitch Lowe, the company’s CEO, told an audience at a Hollywood event that “we know all about you"....“We get an enormous amount of information,” Lowe continued. “We watch how you drive from home to the movies. We watch where you go afterwards.
