Apple Watch

I have been debating about getting the Apple Watch for the past 6 months. I have loved my Fitbit but want to track more health related details and I really like some of the Apple Watch features and the convenience of it. I just went to the Apple store today to check out all the watch options. Pretty sure I am going to get the latest version with LTE. I will have about $400 in visa gift cards between Christmas and a few gift cards I have been saving. I will likely be getting the watch the day after Christmas [emoji1]

DW gives me a slip of paper with the "shopping list" items on it. She's in control of that task. (she's an Apple person and I am Android so we don't sync anything). Then I look at my smartphone time and head off to the market.

My biggest problem is that there are always items on the list that I can't find in the store. My cell phone wont help much in solving that and a watch won't either. So I revert to asking a store clerk.

Our regular grocery store has an app that tells you where something is in the store. So the cellphone comes in handy for that.

I hear hear people call their spouses all the time in the store consulting on their shopping and I bet a frequent question is where to find something.

Never in my wildest dreams as a child did I think that I could have a computer on my wrist that would be more powerful than any of the technology that existed just 20 years ago, regardless of size, and would function as a powerful connected computer that could handle all forms of communication to keep me connected.
Agreed. I like to tell (bore) my kids pointing how incredible these technological developments are. But, these developments are so frequent and seemingly so effortless, that they take them for granted.

He was also an early retiree, and they tried to call him back for Y2K. His response was, "None of MY routines ever had that silly problem!"
The first megacorp I worked for makes communications systems. In 1999, I was working for their division that makes systems for public safety agencies (fire, police, 911, etc.). Some of these systems were ancient and our engineers put together a list of those systems that were going to crash when Y2K arrived.

I was part of the team that got to give the *good news* to those agencies whose systems were going to go down unless they were modernized out of the vaccuum tube era.

One of them was a very large city on the west coast. I can still remember the reaction of the Deputy Chief when we told him. He said "Do you mean to tell me that the City of xxx xxxxxxx is going to be without a 911 system at midnight on New Year's Eve!!??"

"Umm. Yes sir. That is correct." :(

I'm thinking of getting DH an apple watch for Christmas. Be both wear fitbits so are used to something on our wrists even though retired . I like the idea of tracking activities beyond those offered by the fitbit.

So if DH doesn't like it, I will inherit it or if he does, I'll also get one. One of my must haves is phone capability. More often than not I forget my iphone and need to call DH especially when i've also left the shopping list on the kitchen counter . I always have the fitbit on during waking hours. DH has no problems taking his iphone everywhere.

I have the Series 2, which doesn't have phone connectivity without the iPhone.

When I get a call, it will ring on the watch and I can use the Watch to speak and listen but the iPhone has to be in range.

I think often it's people who want to go on a run and not have to carry the iPhone with them. I usually have the iPhone with me.

I've had Fitbit devices for years. But they're now in a fight for their survival. More and more people are spending a little more to get the Watch so they've had no choice but to mimic smart watch features like getting notifications on their devices as well as the ability to pay, a la Apple Pay on the Apple Watch.

So Fitbit smart watches are almost the same prices as Apple Watch but doesn't quite do all the things that Apple Watch can do with iPhones.

In fact, Fitbit won't let you directly sync data with the Apple Health app. on iPhones, so you can't get your steps or stairs climbed over to Apple Health directly. You can buy a third-party app. which will do it for you but Fitbit itself won't help facilitate that data exchange.

It's kind of a shame, I have more data accumulated with Fitbit and I like their dashboard. But my old Fitbit is failing, losing battery power and they still charge $100, the same original price, for a 5-year old design.

When it dies, I'll probably just let it go.

Fitbit rode high on their IPO but now, it's a matter of when they go under. No way they can compete with Apple on a smart Watch that integrates with iPhone better than Apple's own smart watch.

They do support Android but there are a lot of Android smart watches too and Android users tend to spend less money.

Their first mistake though was that a couple of years ago, they cut a deal with Microsoft to integrate their data with Microsoft's health data efforts rather than Apple's efforts.

OK, maybe not a wrong decision per se but when Microsoft smart phones failed in the market, that deal pretty much fizzled. Not too many Fitbit owners have Microsoft Windows phones.

Meanwhile there are complaints all over Fitbit forums about Fitbit not integrating their data with Apple Health app. on iPhones. They're just alienating a lot of their customers but on the other hand, if they make things too good for Apple Health, then they'd be undermining their own smart watches.

So they're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

You could try something like Evernote to have notes that are shared across all devices.

So you'd use one account and access that account from different devices, Apple or Android.

They do have a limit on the number of devices which can create notes on their free account. The limit is two devices. They have paid accounts which increases that limit. However, no limits on the number of devices which can READ the data.

But you can also create notes by logging into the account on a browser too and then when you leave the home, just use the phone.

I have my main phone and iPad able to create notes. So if I am tracking the price of something, I take a picture of it with my iPhone and save it as a note.

Evernote has pretty good OCR so if you took a picture of something with a label, you can later search for that picture by whatever words were on the label. Or you can tag it with keywords when you save the note and search by keywords.

Of course this is all more than you need for a simple shopping list but Evernote is for more than a simple shopping list though you can probably make it work for such since it works on all different devices.

I hated wearing a watch when I was w*rking and it's very, VERY rare that I wear one now. I don't think it's been taken out of the car console in about 2 years.

I appreciate that technology has advanced so quickly and am very thankful for what that means in my life, but I can't bring myself to be attached (quite literately) to these smart devices.

The range is pretty good. I have often been on a different floor of the house from my phone when a call came in. I get it on my watch and answer it without a hitch. I actually get a big kick out of taking a phone call on the watch, feeling like Dick Tracy.

While the basic connection between phone and watch is Bluetooth, they also communicate with each other over wifi, so when they're both on the same wifi network (like in my home) the range is increased.

My new solution (seeing I hate shopping in brick and mortar stores anyway):

(note: DW is not well enough to scurry around the stores)

We buy most consumables at Walmart which is one mile away. I used their online ordering app and bought ~$75 worth of groceries and drug side products. Within one hour, WM emailed me saying my order was ready to be picked up. I went to the pickup location and got the order in 2 minutes with a phone call. They loaded the order in my car. Wonderful!!

This will be the new way of shopping for me (for consumables). :D

Yeah I hadn't worn watches in decades since I started wearing Apple Watch.

I'm skeptical on smart matches and other wearable devices in general. But the idea is that when they become powerful enough, people won't want to even bother carrying around smart phones.

Again, I don't see it reaching that point for a long time, if ever.

Main advantages of Apple Watch for me are fitness tracking (including pulse) and it reduces the need to pull out my iPhone, which I carry around in a little bag with my wallet. So I can see notifications and for some stores, I use Apple Pay so I don't have to pull out iPhone or credit cards, besides being more secure way to use cards.

I bought Apple watches today at the Apple Store for both DH and myself. What an experience. I hate going into an Apple store because every time I get an idiot, including today. DH is the one that does the research and when he goes into the store all he has to do is tell them what he wants...not me and they don't like that . I expect them to know their product, which he didn't. I assume he was one of those Christmas hires. In fact, he took orders of 2 other people that knew exactly what watch they wanted while he was helping me.

I got the series 3 which has cell capability while [-]your[/-] my iphone is sitting on the kitchen counter. Was amazed at the prices for the watch. Bought the cheapy $429 one.

Finally got around to adding data plans on both watches. Had I known how much the add'l taxes and fees were (my fault, I should have asked), I would only have activated mine and waited on DH's to see if we really needed both on data plans...AT&T garbage fees of $4.75/mo. and Gov't taxes & fees of $3/mo. as well as a $30 activation fee on each .

As an Apple and AT&T stockholder, I thank you for your business. :flowers:

me to my my 13 year old nephew (who got a gen1 apple watch for christmas:

So.... how do you use your new apple watch?

him: "well sometimes when I'm bored I flip my wrist and I can see what time it is"
also him: "sometimes I can play tic tac toe on it"

me: do you read texts and stuff on it?

him: "well I see them on my watch but then I pull out my phone to do that because it's easier"

and yet next time you're in a large group or on a flight or something, take a look, they are on about 50% of wrists. Heck, 5 years ago, less than 50% of ppl wore any watch at all.

Several things for me. I love my Apple Watch (2nd edition here), and DW is head over heels with hers.

When out for a workout, I have my progress being tracked and visible on my wrist, which is really nice. Also a little tone to mark each mile or exercise goal.

Another is that when I get a text I can glance at my wrist and I don't have to pull out my phone. I have a bunch of canned responses I can reply with on the watch. That's handy in the car, as the #1 canned response on my list is "Sorry, I'm driving now." A quick tap will send that and I barely have to take my eyes off the road.

Another is Apple Pay. Instead of pulling the phone out of my pocket I can just hold my wrist next to the terminal and double-click the watch button. I use that one often. Much to my surprise, I was able to do that yesterday at a vending machine at a highway rest area.

I also have the current outdoor temperature displayed (along with time and date) all the time, so a glance tells me the weather.

I never thought I would actually buy an Apple Watch, but once I did I wondered why it took me so long.

For me it's Apple Pay and then the playback controls.

I have some wireless headphones which do not have volume controls so I otherwise would have to pull out my iPhone.

The controls have little buttons to FF or Rew 15 seconds which is useful inpodcasts because they now embed so many commercials and live reads of commercials these days.

Yeah - I'm afraid of that.

Didn't they give you three months free at least?

Ouch! on the activation fees!!!!!

We don't really need the data plans, so we have been hesitant to sign up. Our plans would be t-mobile.

We've been waiting for the plan prices to drop anyway.

Well - we use ours much more heavily than your nephew - but then he is only 13 (and has his own iPhone!!?)

Yep - all of these plus we use the built in timers and reminder lists (for shopping in particular) extensively.

Shared shopping lists in reminders works really well in the iOS, and you can view and check off the list on your apple watch when in the store!!!

The "wrist" timers I use several times a day.

Lots of things are on my main watch display (customizable) - a very quick glance and I'm up to date with huge amount of important to me info. Tap on the section of the display to get to any details.

I do a lot of scheduling and get pings on my watch as handy reminders. Coordinated through the Calendar and Reminders apps and shared across all Macs and iOS devices. For traveling and doctors appointments we have shared calendars so DH also has the latest time-critical info.

Driving with a GPS route Apple Maps - in addition to the audio prompts from the phone, the watch does wrist taps to tell you when to turn very precisely! You don't have to guess how far a mile is! We're approaching two decades of GPS driving, and I can't tell you how important this subtle little feature is.

I can control my Apple TV from my watch. That is handy. Like when I'm cooking but the remote is in the main room.

I’m not sure this is still valid:, but when I activated my Apple Watch with AT&T, I recieved a credit after 3 months of service.

This is one of my favorites [raises wrist and says “Hey Siri, add beer to my grocery list”]

A couple other features not mentioned that I love:

When I approach my Mac, Apple Watch unlocks it

Nightstand Mode makes it the best bedside alarm clock I’ve ever owned

I just don't see the point of adding cellular coverage to the watch (for me, anyway). I nearly always have the phone with me.

Occasionally a voice call will come in, and I'm either driving or at home with the phone in another room. I can answer the call easily on the watch, Dick Tracy style. Having a watch with cellular would be a waste of money for me.

I just got an Apple watch, I think Series 2, and I am surprised how much I like it. It only works when my phone is near, but my phone is usually near. Now according to blow that dough, I should have bought the latest version and I made up my mind that next time I will.
