Just throwing this out there. I know there is a 2024 thread but that is too early for me. Want to see if anyone has any interested in a 2030 thread.

I think it would be fun to be working towards a date even if it is quite a few years away. Let me know if there is any interest?

I am currently at 32% of my min. goal of 2.4

We are in the hopeful class of 2030, and would love to join the thread. I've been doing my own update thread for the past 2 years here: http://www.early-retirement.org/for...-lawyer-looking-for-er-in-15-years-80380.html

Currently sitting at about $650k investments with a goal of $2.25-2.5M. I'll be happy if we hit that by 2030, give or take. 2030 is a nice round number.

Thanks for joining the thread! I am sure others will join along the way. Nice work on your progress! I have a few years on you in regards to age but 2030 (roughly) sounds like a great year to pull back! Looking forward to the journey.

Oh hell yeah - put me down for the 2030 club too! We are a little over $800K now and also targeting that magical $2MMish #. Like both of you, I don't know if it will be 2030 on the dot...lots can happen over that time, but that sounds like a good mile marker to put in the sand. Would love to post updates along the way. Good luck and lets go get this!

Really enjoyed reading your thread and your progress. You are killing it! Keep it up and hop we are all cracking open champagne in 2030.

Sweet! Thanks for joining. This should make the journey more fun! I was just telling my wife how blessed we are compared to the hole we were in 8 years ago. This site is great because it helps keep the focus.

So after I tightened up my miscalculated excel sheet. I am currently at
Tax Deferred 430k
After Tax 169k
HSA 12k
Mortgage 0
Total 611K

2.4 million goal: percentage to goal is 25%. I think this is how I will chart moving forward. The after tax needs to get beefed up. Seems like that is the hardest to do! Lets do this.

Holy Cow - you have the mortgage paid off:dance: You are doing great. Just curious...did you throw everything but the kitchen sink at the mortgage and shut down/cut back the tax deferred & after tax? Every month, I parse out our "excess cash" to three areas...extra principal payments on the mortgage, variable annuity & a 529. Sometimes it feels like I am running in place vs. making progress with that, "a little here, a little there" with my contributions.

Thanks. We had jumped on the Ramsey plan several years ago and he focuses on paying the house off but still contributing 15% to Retirement.

In our case, we had our old primary/rental come back in value so we sold and got a few bucks from and paid down the principal. The rest it took about 2 in a half years and we just contributed to 401k and threw the rest on the house. For us it was more of a mental thing. When the market fell out ten years ago it was tough for us so we decided to commit to paying off the house so if it happened again we would be debt free.

As you know by reading this website there are arguments for both sides. Mathematically probably wasn't the best thing to do but it sure feels damn good right now.

Not to pry, well kind of but are you investing into any other vehicles after tax outside of the variable annuity?

The only after-tax investing right now is to the variable annuity. Prior to this month, I was paying off our last car loan, plowing money into the kiddo's 529 and paying in extra on our mortgage. Technically, I will have an extra $500/mth from no car loan and not sure "where?" I will put that money. I could speed up the 529 plan some, could pay more on the mortgage, could start a new after-tax investment...decisions, decisions...

These are good problems to have! I have not gone down the annuity path yet as Dave Ramsey brainwashed me. They have peaked my interest though for guaranteed income in my later years to cover some basics and diversification. I have been reading about them to see what makes sense for us. Right now we just have 401k, Mutual Funds & a Money Market.

2030?

I have been FIRE'd for 6 years, and hope to stay FIRE'd in the next 12 years. Money wise, it will not be a problem, but health wise one can never be so sure even if my health is good now.

I'll join up. Original plan was 2031, life is waay too short though, maybe I can jump a year sooner.

I’m in. I hope to go semi-FIRE or have a sabbatical before then. Or maybe switch careers or who knows what. 2030 is a good goal. I reckon you all are my new cohort. Greetings.

I did a Variable Annuity for a very specific reason at the time...4ish years ago, we were less disciplined with money and I wanted to invest the gap between what statutory limit on 401k contributions was and what my plan actually let me do. So, wanted something tax deferred and hard to get to once the balance started building. I am paying "extra" for the tax deferral piece due to the annuity wrapper. If it is working for you doing the taxable mutual funds on the side, I would keep plugging away. As someone else noted on a different thread, you can always fork over some money to an insurance company down the road to annuitize and create a mini-pension stream if you want. Just my two cents.

Now it's a party! Feel free to post anything in here you want. Vacations you are taking, a toy purchased, etc. Need to have a little fun along the way. It can't be all business.

Greetings to all those jumping in on the 2030 party and really appreciate hilltide for kicking this off! Question for the group - for those with little ones, what is your approach for college savings? My wife & I both had to pay 100% of our way and not going to lie - it sucked and it was hard and that was 25+ years ago when college was a heck of a lot cheaper. Anyway, we do not want our little one to have to go through that, but trying to strike a balance on how much to save? where to save - right now, everything is in a 529 plan and our initial goal was to plow enough for 4 years of instate public U. It is tough to project where a young elementary kid is going to end up...ha.ha. So, what are you guys doing?

I plan on being FI 2030 but will most likely keep working for a while after that. For kids college, dumped 25k in at birth and let it ride. I got ~$10k in help from my parents (after year 2000; so recently). We can afford to pay the rest from discretionary at any state school but I don’t want to just hand everything to them. The struggle was part of the fun.

I planned on 2032 at 45 but who knows 2030 can be my year if I’m lucky enough to have Mr. Market keep going up. I’m in to keep me motivated and I like reading other people’s journey to hit 2030.

I plan on retiring 2033, but I’m up for the challenge! At least become FI by 2030! Excited to get the extra motivation from this group!

We are doing the same. Kids are currently 2 and 0, we can adjust later if necessary/desired. But I think we'll be satisfied with using the 529 to cover in-state public. If kiddos want to do something more expensive, we'll have to figure out the solution that works for the whole family to cover the gap -- probably some combination of student loans, non-529 savings (i.e., brokerage), and cash flow. We are currently doing $400 per month, per child in the 529, and then supplementing that with whatever they get in birthday/holiday gifts from the grandparents, etc.

Count me in! I'm aiming to FI/RE by 2031 at the latest. This is gonna be a great thread! Keep it up, everyone!
