Airplane Etiquette Rules

All I can say is WOW, reading these posts gives me a good understanding on how people on here put themselves above others.

I hate it when the person in front of me reclines their seat back all of the way. I feel like I am literally trapped, especially if I am in the middle seat. People need to be a little more considerate of their fellow passengers, IMHO.

I kind of view it as, if everyone plays by the rules, there is no need for anyone to sacrifice.

All of these rules (in my mind only of course) apply to able-bodied people of minimal intelligence. If you have medical needs that require you to recline all the way, or be walking in the aisle most of the flight, or you have claustrophobia and can only avoid freaking out by having a shade open...ok fine I'll concede, ...

but beyond that, what honor is there in "sacrificing" my lap to row-in-front-dude's nap?

Well, I'll take issue with a couple:

Don't Recline Your Seat: At the beginning of the article they say "If this year's trip abroad.." . Sorry, when travelling on a looooong flight, I am going to sleep, and I WILL recline. I will do it slowly, and probably not all the way back.

Keep the Window Shade Up: While I normally reserve an aisle seat, if I am at the window i will close it if I am trying to sleep.

Agreed, these seemed really weird and not in line with my experiences on planes.

+1000. I consider it a right to be able to recline my seat, insofar as the airlines allow. I will bring it upright for meals, of course. I strongly disagree about the window shade. Many of my flights have me chasing the sunset, and it's very annoying trying to sleep with the sun shining in one's eyes (sometimes for up to 8 hours).

Really?

Did you consider recycling your seat?

Often, I don't. But if the person in front of me does, i usually do also.

And I don't feel I am being mistreated either way.

I did have a guy complain to me once. I told him he should talk to the person in front of me.

I feel trapped in the middle seat(s) whether there's a reclined seat in front of me or not. I never considered, nor do I now, believe that reclining one's seat is inconsiderate (except at meal time).

I do feel that kids contantly tugging on the seat in front of them is inconsiderate, as are screaming babies, babies throwing up in the seat next to me, and oversized people spilling over the armrests into the seat I paid for.

I am no better than anyone else, I will sacrifice my comfort for others.

Can you say that while flying in front section of the plane.

Sure can. I sacrifice all the coach seats (and pay accordingly) for those who care to sit in that section. :D

These are my unofficial rules:

The middle person gets both armrests because the middle sucks hard. The aisle and window folks get their one side and can lean on it more.

There are usually 3 notches for reclining. One is polite, two is understandable on long/night flights. 3 is in my lap and i hate you.

The window shade goes down after take off, and up for descent, and only opens mid-flight if the captain says something like "oh hey lookie at the grand canyon down there".

The person who needs to pee a lot should book the aisle.
The person who wants to sleep should book the window.
No one should try to talk to me.
If you put your overhead in my row and are not seated in my row I hate you.
Do not bring cooked smelly food or drinks onto the plane.
You may not turn on any lights on a red eye.

Yes I like these too. And getting out of the aisle as soon as possible while boarding is a considerate practice. Not peeing on the floor in the lav is good too.

I fly different times during the year. I pay for my seat and I recline it. On!y time the seat is in the upright position is during takeoff and landing.
If you were in front of me, it would be a bumpy flight.

You should hear the people with private jets!

That was my gripe on trans Atlantic flights from the west coast. Everyone is trying to sleep before getting to Europe, and there was always some idiot who raises the shade to look out while we are over the North Atlantic, sending a shaft of sunlight across the entire cabin.

Well , if the airlines and FAA / Euro / Asia equivalent, had an ounce of common sense,

That passenger would be in the cockpit jump seat , looking at the sky and ocean, keeping an eye on things while the flight crew gets some shut eye ......

...... Several retired and active flight crew have explained to me the practice of " Examining the overhead instrument panel " for an hour or so, with sun glasses on , while the other stays awake on boring long flights.

I only recline a little bit. I have had people recline so far back that with my back problems the only way to get up is to pull on the top of their seat. If someone complains I nicely explain the issue so they can recline less or put up with it. I am at higher risk of blood clots so stand every 2 hours for 5 minutes. I have found mostly if you are polite and nice very few issues arise.

Now I remember why I hate to fly.

Exactly. Not to mention what you have to go through prior to even boarding the plane. I know it’s a bit snobby, but things are a lot better in first class. Just wish I could justify it every time I fly. It is expensive.

Note that we collectively do this to ourselves. I’ve always hoped that an airline would emerge that would strike a compromise. I’d be willing to pay more than coach but less than first class to be treated like a human being. And, don’t even mention coach plus or whatever the hell they call that joke of giving you an extra inch of legroom for a price.

As you make fun of overweight women, people who cant afford nice clothes like you, all while calling all people in coach animals. Sad, Sad person you are.
