Notre Dame is burning.

FWIW, some portions lost in the fire, such as the spire, were not the originals. For example, the spire was rebuilt during the early 1800s. The event still represents a tragic loss though, and it's good to know major portions survived.

We changed our daughters diaper in Notre Dame when she was 8 mo old gotta do what you gotta do! It was a beautiful serene building and the rose windows will be a truly epic loss if they are not salvageable

Sadly, much of what made the cathedral cannot be rebuilt despite the intention to rebuild it. Sad, truly sad.

This image was just tweeted by the cathedral's account (eta: not a verified account, looks like a new account, but still, pic is via reuters and is legit), with the following comment:
"Only a small part of the vault collapsed. Interior seems relatively untouched. Alleluia!"

The oldest towers are saved, 19thc spiral tower gone. Much of the art work and 12 statues were removed for safekeeping when they started the retro fitting. Anyway that's what it says on the news. No way to save the old beams that held the roof up for those stained glass windows. I'm glad I saw it in 2016 because I don't think it's ever gonna be the same even though Macron is promising to rebuild

Someone in the office said Notre Dame is burning this morning. I thought...South Bend. About an hour later I catch some internet and it's Paris! That makes our family heart sick. We were there 2 years ago just after Easter

Probably closed for a few years now? Some poor plumber is checking his liability policy tonight

Newsweek has an article about the arson occurring in French churches in 2019.

I googled "Newsweek article on desecrated churches in France".

Notre Dame in 2014. I believe that the walls and bell towers have survived.

I remember walking around Notre Dame in 2015 admiring the flying buttresses. We toured the interior a few days later. This is painful to see such a huge fire.

EDITED TO ADD: They just did 5 minutes on it in our TV news coverage. Arson has already been ruled out, which is surprising when the fire is not even completely out yet, but the reasons why it was ruled out were not stated in the news coverage.
Well, fire started in an attic & quickly spread. Would be hard for arsonist to even get there to start & then get out without being trapped. Now if they find a body........

This is cool:

"the French billionaire François-Henri Pinault, pledged almost $113 million to rebuild Paris’ historic Notre Dame Cathedral after Monday’s devastating fire.

Pinault announced Tuesday that he will draw almost $113 million in funds from his family’s investment firm, Artemis, “to participate in the effort that will be necessary for the complete reconstruction of Notre-Dame,” the French newspaper Le Figaro reported."

"Bernard Arnault, owner of the luxury goods group LVMH, which is responsible for Moët Hennessy and Louis Vuitton SE among other brands, pledged $226 million toward reconstruction efforts. The Arnault family and LVMH will make the donation to save such an important “symbol of France, its heritage and its unity,” LVMH said in a statement."

I'm not sure how arson was ruled out so quickly, but I no longer trust anything the media says...especially in cases where inconvenient facts may not be welcome.

Sounds like a bit of the plot of Pillars of the Earth.

This morning's news is very encouraging... and ALL THREE OF THE LARGE ROSE WINDOWS SURVIVED THE FIRE!!!!
The three 'irreplaceable' Rose Windows, which date to the 13th century and were last night feared to have melted or exploded, were also intact.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...Notre-Dame-inferno-leaves-world-mourning.html

What an amazing and (to me) unexpected outcome after having read the opposite yesterday. Such a relief to find this out, so I thought I'd pass it along. Even this morning, I am reading the following:
Firefighters told how the building's stained-glass rose windows, high on the north, west and south faces of the cathedral, "exploded" in the heat of the inferno.
at this link, but it must be incorrect.

I found this photo too!!! WOW!!! There it is, that window in all its glory amid the rubble. What a miracle.

I think there is/should be still some concern about how stable the structure is, but it's really amazing how much of it seems to have come through, given what that fire looked like.

Nothing can be ruled out quickly. The experts aren’t even able to exam much of the structure yet as they don’t know how safe or unsafe it may be. I imagine it will be weeks if not months before a final report on the cause is released.

In the meantime, anybody know of acres of 400 year old oak trees that can be cut down to make a new roof and other wood structures needed for the restoration?

My thoughts on it too. There is no way anyone can rule out anything about a fire of this magnitude this early. And "months" would be fast, more likely it'll take a year or more. I wouldn't be surprised if facts are still emerging for several years. And one little tidbit can change the whole outlook.

My first thought when they said arson had been ruled out was that if anyone is aware of the actual cause, that assurance might be enough for them to come forward and report whatever information they may have. Without that assurance they would be more likely to keep mum to avoid any possible suspicion.

OK, that's cynical but it's what I thought.

I think the phrase "ruled out" was premature, and may have been added editorially as news like this is always a bit wonky in the first hours...but from the start, given the ongoing active renovation work, an accident looked likely. Also, the source of the fire was up near the roof - where renovations were focused, not exactly an ideal place to get in and out without suspicion.

AP is reporting that Paris prosecutors have 50 investigators on it, and expect the full inquiry will be long and complex.
