We have trip cancelation insurance on our credit card.

The only time we have ever used trip insurance was to claim for a cancelled trip to China eighteen months ago.

We submitted the claim. We received a cheque for the full amount of the claim within ten business days. We were surprised and pleased.

We're debating whether to pay $224 for a 75% refund if we cancel for any reason, 100% for illness, injury, etc., on airfare a little over $3K for flights about 5 months away. This is with USAA's recommended/endorsed provider, Travel Insured International, so I'm not that worried about service. Even if there was no (remote) risk of a pandemic, we have a horse who has some interesting medical quirks, and a cat with even more. Both are fairly easy to take care of right now, but it wouldn't be a surprise if care for either of them suddenly got much more expensive and/or complicated.

But mostly we're concerned about the possibility that this will spread like influenza. Oh, and both our j*bs are up in the air right now, so we could both be involuntarily retired in the coming weeks, although that looks much less likely now than it did a week ago.

The number of confirmed cases on board the Diamond Princess quarantined off Yokohama has increased to 69 cases.

Holland America's MS Westerdam cruise ship, which has no sick patients yet denied docking by several countries, is said to have obtained permission to dock at an unspecified port.

Just got a return email from the Chinese company that I bought the drone from:

"We sincerely apologize for the delay of your order, this is definitely not the experience we wanted to you have and remember. After checking with your order, it shows that the all items in your order are already available. The courier has been assigned which is FEDEX and your package will be ship from our warehouse in China.

However, we sorry to let you know that in line with the National Chinese Holiday, we are expecting a delay with all the the orders specifically orders that will be ship from our warehouse in China until Feb 9th.

To when the exact shipment date of your order, we're sorry to let you know that we are unable to confirm it yet."

So they say that the National Chinese Holiday is causing the delay. But there are published reports of their office is closed due to the coronavirus. Interesting.

The regime has called the lockdown an extension of the new year holiday, so the language in the email you hit is just parroting the propaganda. Basically they are telling you that they will ship when the regime tells them they can

If you don't mind, which CC had the trip ins. ?

I hadn't heard of that company, so I did a quick search and found a bunch of very poor recent reviews for their claim servicing.

Thanks... although I have had issues with USAA lately, I still think they'd look out for me if I had a claim. I'm torn, because of all the stories here about claims troubles, I feel like I won't necessarily do any better if I go elsewhere. But I'll do a little more research today.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, some bad reviews from USAA members! I'm definitely going to have to start my search all over....

We have a trip planned to London and Rome at the end of April for 16 days. We already have our flights which are non refundable but can be changed for a fee. We bought insurance when we bought the tickets. As much as possible, we are booking accommodations and tours that are refundable but that's not always possible.

I'm thinking about taking along hand sanitizer that uses chlorhexadine which is the active ingredient in Hibiclens. The advantage of that formulation is the antiseptic properties persist for many hours.

Don't get me started on Citi Bank eliminating their already modest trip insurance from my Costco Visa Card.

Another Unsatisfied Costco Visa Card holder here !!

I changed my CC on my upcoming trip (from Costco Visa), so the rest of the fee for the CRUISE would be taken from a CC that has trip insurance !!

I'm thinking of dropping my Costco Visa card, as it has nearly zero advantage to my other cards.

We might see you in London ;)
We are taking hand sanitizer (will look up chlorhexadine) :flowers:
We are also taking some N95 masks (I had a bunch already.)

Do you have other cards that give you a 3% cash back on dining, hotels and travel with no foreign transaction fee?

I have the BOA premier CC (and I qualify for their Preferred Rewards).
It has a fee of $95/yr.
Note: I hate paying a fee to use a CC, but this one I feel is worth it, as I get back $100 just in Airline upgrade/baggage fees. (as long as paid after ticket issued).

So I get:

  • no foreign TF.
  • 3.5% cash back on travel and dining.
  • 2.6% cash back on everything else.
  • Pretty good trip delay/cancellation coverage that I have not used.
  • I did use the $100 Airline Incidental Statement Credit annually, last year to upgrade our seats (after booking a flight, so it shows as incidental), and I will use it yearly I'm pretty sure.
  • Will be using the $100 GE reimbursement when I apply for Global Entry.
Here is the link for the information, but note, it does not explain how Preferred Rewards boosts the cash back higher.

I also have their cash reward CC and have it set to 5% back on online purchases.

Brett, I am going to look and see if the CC I put our airfare on has trip cancellation insurance. Otherwise we may lose 1500 if we cannot go. I really hope we can as it will be my DIL’s mom’s birthday in Poland.

I just ate about $2000 to not go on a trip to Thailand and HK.

There's deep cynicism about how the Thai govt. is handling the outbreak. They haven't blocked or imposed any kind of controls on Chinese tourists, like other Asian countries.

I have a trip at the end of April to Portugal. If it's breaking out still then, I doubt even the US would be immune from wide breakout, large number infected and large number dying.

So far, all but maybe a few deaths have been in China.

I see Norwegian has refused to refund customers scheduled to cruise in the next week in Asia. Unbelievable

I was getting a little nervous about my short of CCL but the more I read, I kind of want to double down. Greed can get you though...this whole thing *could* blow over.

We planned on going to Vegas this spring but will wait until fall...time will tell. Until then, we'll take a few trips in the car.

Yes I do. Wells Propel Amex. 3pct cashback on dining, hotels, gas, travel type expenses. No annual fee. No foreign transaction fees. And I don't have to use the money at Costco or sams. which I think was one of the catches on atleast one of the warehouse cards.

Of the cruise lines ive sailed on, Norwegian by far is the standout cruise company most likely to kill you and not care. They do sketchy stuff and from what I see are badly managed and don't select their contractors well in ports.

In 2014 we did a loop, Copenhagen-Copenhagen, to Iceland, etc, followed by a repositioning cruise Copenhagen-Miami, on the Norwegian Star.

Totally unimpressed. We'd have to get a damn good deal before we'd even consider going with them again.

I bought puts on ccl and rcl. This is meant as a hedge. I figure if stuff gets ugly out there, they will suffer disproportionately.

We are scheduled to leave on a Caribbean cruise on the 23rd. I'll let you know how it goes.
