What are a few weeks or month out of your life. Southern Michigan is raging with COVID. It think it is incredibly selfish for Michiganders not to stay put until this cools off. These PROTESTERS are people that are only thinking of themselves, not their families, friends, or communities. Michigan is loaded with beautiful lakes and scenery. BUT, This is NOT the time to go roaming with your camper, launch at ramps, cottages up north, or create any problems that would put others in harms way. Nothing is ever a problem until it is. Michigan has a serious health crisis that doesn't need to be spread further across the state. Stay put and stop bellyaching. IT WILL CALM DOWN SOON.

Pure liquor stores now closed. We can still get liquor at Walmart, Meijers, and other grocery stores.

Whitmer even padlocked outdoor tennis court facilities. I'd be mad about that, but it snowed the last two mornings.

So you can buy beer but not carrot seeds? Priorities, I guess. No wonder the folks have had it. Sounds insane to me and not related to science or stopping coronovirus.....Sounds like somebody wants to tell somebody how to live....That never goes over well in the "land of the free".

Good luck up there.

This morning's shopping experience:

Once again, arrived at Costco at 7:30, and they were already open and letting people in. Most people in this area have not caught on that they are opening well before 8. When I left just after 8, there were about 70-80 folks waiting to get in, as crowd control measures had been implemented at that point.

The only item we wanted that I could not find was condensed milk (we got evaporated Otherwise, everything else seem well stocked. I observed a lot of paper towels, and TP was on pallets scattered throughout the floor. At one point there were 4 people going for the last 2 packages on a pallet, and an employee told them about other locations in the stock where TP was located.

The Maryland "masks on" edict does not go into effect until Saturday, but almost everyone had masks on. I counted 3 shoppers who did not.

Interestingly, I counted 6 Instacart shoppers, all of whom were clearly under 60. Perhaps Costco lets them in anytime.

At Walmart, no line to get in and probably 100 shoppers in the store. I counted only 6 people without masks. They had a few hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial soap items, I imagine those will be bought by noon. Flour section was still cleaned out. Some PT, very little PT.

This is misinformation

Awesome....so you can buy paint and carrot seeds at the Home Depot in Michigan?

(If I am spreading mis-information, I do apologize.....can someone confirm?)

From Reuters....Is this fake news or mis-information?

"Michigan residents and local businesses are furious over a new rule, purportedly aimed at stopping the spread of coronavirus, which bars them from buying and selling seeds – now deemed a “non-essential” item.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced in a public address that “essential” businesses such as grocery stores will be restricted in what they are allowed to offer to their customers. The policy, the governor argued, is meant to limit unnecessary foot traffic in public spaces exempt from the state-wide shutdown.

“If you’re not buying food, medicine, or other essential items, you should not be going to the store,” she said. Big-box retailers such as Walmart were ordered to shutter entire sections of their stores – such as furniture, carpeting, plant nurseries, paint, and garden centers – beginning on April 10.

The state’s strict lockdown measures mean residents will be stuck at home for the start of spring, but those who were hoping to plant a vegetable garden to help pass the time – or get some fresh air – are fresh out of luck.

Outraged shoppers have posted photographs of roped-off shelves of seeds."

I use Instacart to shop at Costco. How can you tell they are Instacart shoppers? Are they talking thru some kind of device or just their own cellphones?

Politifact rates this as false. https://www.politifact.com/factchec...esnt-ban-gardening-or-sale-seeds-and/#sources
A headline shared on social media inaccurately describes an order that Whitmer issued in response to the coronavirus.

The order does not prohibit gardening or the sale of any particular product in Michigan. Stores in Michigan larger than 50,000 square feet must close areas for garden centers and plant nurseries, as well as those that sell carpet or flooring, furniture and paint.

We rate the statement False.

Understood.....So what is the answer to the question:

"Can I buy paint and seeds at Home Depot in Michigan?"

yes or no?

Do you live in Michigan and want to buy seeds and paint, or is this just a general awareness question? You can always call a HD store in Michigan and ask. Please don’t forget to report back when you do.

We've got snowbirds in our beach condo in Alabama and the've asked to stay on thru May and they were rattling off all the reasons not to return home...the governors restrictions were the primary reason but I could not believe it.

Does anyone know first hand...Is it mis-information or fake news? Can you buy carrot seeds and paint at the Home Depot in Michigan?

Thanks!

The Michigan criteria is the sq footage of the store (not the name of the store). Stores > 50,000 sq feet have the restrictions about closing garden centers, carpert flooring, paint etc.

Smaller than 50,000 sq feet the more general restrictions apply. (ie. People should not leave home for non-essential purposes).

Note I suspect that this was targeted at Menards who continued to run sales to pack people in for these types of seasonal goods despite multiple warnings form the MI AG on their behavior after the Governor's initial C19 Executive orders. . Note also that Menards is relatively new to Michigan.

If I were interested in paint or lawn seed, I would try a small independent hardware store. Hardware stores have products that are deemed essential (think hot water tank repair parts) but also tend to sell additional products.

I heard they don't allow you to buy paint and carrot seeds...but the liquor store is up and open.

You heard wrong. This was your original point. This is misinformation. As for HD, they have presumably closed paint and garden areas.

Thank You! So it was not mis-information or fake news!

Good luck to all in Michigan! Be safe. Be kind.

(I know the snowbirds were glad they could hang out on the Alabama coast for a few more weeks)

These folks wore a green "Instacart" vest over their clothing. I had never seen that before.

I also saw one woman with this vest approach one of the employees at the exit and say she was an Instacart shopper, somehow implying that they could get in the store without waiting at the entrance. I did not hang around to see what transpired.

I never knew Instacart provided something one wore to identify one as such. Of course, who knows, maybe they were fake vests to allow them to shop during senior hours. :)

I am wondering if you enjoy spreading misinformation. Initially it was a ban on selling seeds then you changed it to Home "Depot specific after you had been educated.

Some people enjoy being outraged at government actions even if the information is false.

Ventured out to Target because we had a couple of $100 gift cards offered by our health care plan for everyone who got a flu vaccine by the end of 2019. I'll make a bold prediction this incentive will not appear necessary for the next flu vaccine.

Rounded a corner and there, nesting quietly on the shelves was what now appears to be a rather large flock of TP. Perhaps they were exhausted from reports of large crowds and rough handling. Several 30 pack 2-ply as well as a large section of the rare Charmin 18 pack mega rolls perched under a sign asking everyone to play well with others.

I looked both ways, fearing a stampede, and reverently scooped up a 30 pack.

Understood but no need to judge me....I never want to spread mis-information....my apology if you thought I was doing so.

All the best....stay safe!

I would also point out that while you may think this is Reuters (a legitimate news service), your quote was actually from RT, a Russian news promoter with very suspect aims.

Thanks. Why is this not a surprise?

This is a hijack of a pleasant and useful discussion about moving to Michigan. Let’s move this discussion into one of the shopping threads, where it belongs.

Sounds like you don't vet your tenants very well Rex! Formulating their plans on whether they can purchase carrot seeds at Home Depot sounds like they are idiots. They can just have carrot seeds mailed to them from Burpee's or similar. It will be to your benefit to have learned your lesson and do a better job next year. There are lots of landlords on this forum who can comment on the importance on not renting to idiots and carrot seed junkies.

Good point....that's why I wanted the wise souls on this forum to confirm.....And I think the answer is NO, you cannot buy paint or seeds at the Home Depot, Lowe's whatever Big Box you frequent.

This forum is a good place to sort through hysteria and get to the facts. And the snowbirds were correct when they rattled that off as a reason to spend more time on the Alabama coast!

I might agree! But they are good folks and have been snowbirding for several years. And hope they don't want to plant carrots at the condo! Or paint the condo Michigan blue!

Anyway, they are Upper Peninsula (UP people, I think you say) and I think a primary reason for staying may be the weather! They were hearing from folks "back home" about all the hassles.

All good...stay safe!
