Most annoying/dumbest in tele.

I watch (on Youtube) a group of British comedians who appear on various game shows: QI, 8 out of 10 Cats, the Big Fat Quiz of the Year, (the original) Taskmaster, etc. The shows are often silly, but the brightness is turned up. I laugh and often learn something.

A big +1 to QI (which stands for Quite Interesting). I used to enjoy it a little more when Stephen Fry was the host, but Sandi Toksvig is very capable. She was a good choice to replace him, I think. Alan Davies is always entertaining.

My other favorite show is Have I Got News For You, which provides entertaining commentary on the week's current events. It is, of course, UK-centric, but the Americans come in for plenty of good-natured jokes. They've had some great celebrity hosts, including William Shatner, and Boris Johnson. All available on YouTube.

The Brits seem to be good at producing entertaining shows that are also informative. BBC Radio 4 has a panel game called Just A Minute, in which the contestants are challenged to speak for one minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition, on a subject that is provided to them. Entertainment doesn't have to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and good old Aunty Beeb proves that. Just A Minute has been on the radio for decades.

Thanks to QI, I learned that people used to think an effective way to save a person from drowning was to blow smoke up their bottom. Bellows used to be hung from the sides of the River Thames for this purpose. More recently, I learned from the same program, that the Arctic ground squirrel, in order to hibernate, can reduce it's body temperature to below the freezing point of water, and reduce it's heartbeat to about 2 beats a minute. During this process, their blood remains liquid. It is thought this occurs through a process whereby impurities are removed from the blood, inhibiting the formation of ice crystals. I like being entertained, while learning these interesting things.

Like comedies are boss.

Well, for one, a clever, resourceful, ER'd friend of mine, who loves all the romance shows. She knows they're fake, and yet loves to criticize the participants.

OK, fair enough answer. I confess I watch a lot of shows others may think are dumb. Retro stuff like 1 Adam 12. The Rifleman. Gunsmoke. Wagon Train. Leave it to Beaver. And the commercials aren't as long as they are on the 'new' TV shows.

You crack me up. She has a terrific life, which many would envy. Her hobbies aren't your hobbies, and no doubt both of you are the better for it.

Her needs to get a life.

I would love to see a programme that shows noorth going but trees growing. Not that would be verrrrrry interesting to look at.

Who watches The Bachelor and Bachelorette? We found out. We have great friends who are a retired professor and a retired teacher. My husband called a few times on Monday evenings and finally they told us to NEVER call Monday evenings, because they are avid fans of The Bachelor and Bachelorette. They were very serious about it. Sometimes when we see the ads that a VERY DRAMATIC episode is airing, my husband wants to call them at that time, just to be funny. All I can figure is that it is truly escapist fare.

There's almost nothing I watch on the major networks any more except sports and occasionally news. All the dramas, sitcoms, reality shows, etc. are WAY too predictable - I can tell you how the episode will end within 10 minutes at least 90% of the time. DW still watches several fire/police/detective and medical dramas still, but I can't stomach any of them anymore. When I watch anything, I watch YouTube, PBS and Apple TV+ and other channels on Hulu+Live. If it wasn't for live sports, I wouldn't even have live broadcast TV any more...

I think reality shows, talk shows, and competition shows (like Dancing “Stars”) are all bad, but then I don’t watch any of them so I’m probably not the best judge.

All those shows are so scripted even though that is not mentioned. The emotions are defiantly fake.

I agree 100%. I like The Price is Right. But what if a player wins a prize they have no use for. Like a weight lifting set. Are the poor peeps stuck wilt that prize.

Here is something. Wheel of Fortune is advertising in this forum.

The existence of reality proves to me that (a) almost everyone has a price they can be bought for, and (b) Many feel that there is no such thing as bad publicity. :)

Yes, network TV is truly dumbed down. The repetitive plot exposition via clunky dialogue is a dead giveaway as to what's going to happen next.

Wow, this sounds exactly like my household. DW watches Food Network cooking shows, HGTV real estate shows and a couple of crime shows.

If it weren't for the need to have cable to get the home team MLB baseball and college football games I would cancel cable in a heartbeat. I have Apple TV, Paramount+ and Amazon Prime. So no commercials. The only time I see commercials is when I watch live sports. It's so maddening, esp. during NFL games. Example: Commercials. Kick off results in a touchback, ball on the 20 yard line. Commercials. Three downs and out. Punt. Commercials. etc. etc.

If MLB.com lifts the blackout on streaming local home games I will likely cancel cable and buy the MLB package. Ability to stream local home games has been talked about for almost 2 years now but the regional sports networks (RSN's) have a stranglehold on local broadcasting rights. Maybe with the players association's collective bargaining agreement coming up this winter there will be movement on streaming home games as well.

All I can say is thank godness for streaming. We still watch Survivor and Jeapardy. Also the news and sports. We have our favourites on Streaming. Goliath, American Rust, Ted Lasso. Scenes from a Marriage, Only Murders in the Building, The Good Fight, Billions, The White Lotus, Better Call Saul, Money Heist, The Crown, Mare of Easttown, Your Honor.

And then there are others that we are hoping for new episodes. There is also a lot of crap on streaming too!

As are all the Real Housewives. Absolutely atrocious people with zero self awareness can be quite [-]compelling[/-] nauseating.

These types of shows are the very bottom of the barrel, IMHO. Utterly devoid of any redeeming qualities.

Survivor, one of the oldest reality shows would fall in the enjoyable category for me. I've watched since the beginning.

Totally agree. Survivor is that rare "reality" show (actually, more like a social adventure game show) that actually has some substance and doesn't rely purely on shrill, catty, infantile squabbling among groups of superficial, self-absorbed imbeciles.

Just about everything on broadcast TV to me seems to me to be driven to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I find it all pretty much intolerable.

Mostly I stream shows. A lot from PBS. I’ve also found a bunch of interesting YouTube channels I really like…

Some of their prices seem to be very low. Was so appalled by the "600-pound life" show, I did a little research. In return for sharing the painful facts of their lives for a whole year, the participants are paid $1,500, plus doctor's fees of course. In addition, they get $2500 to move near the doctor's clinic (and, presumably, back again after their year is up).

The existence of reality proves to me that (a) almost everyone has a price they can be bought for, and (b) Many feel that there is no such thing as bad publicity. :)

“Naked and Afraid”

This is absolutely the bottom of the barrel. And there are people employed to just blur out the particular naked bits that can’t be shown on tv.

Ya, I'm angry that I don't get to see the naked bits too!

I have 3 friends (a retired trust attorney, a retired physicist, and I forget the 3rd retiree's prior occupation) who religiously watch The Bachelor and The Bachelorette and send each other snarky texts about the goings-on.

Somehow I was added to their group text chat. As I hadn't seen The Bachelor since season 1 (when I was simply curious to see what it was all about), I had nothing to add and was soon dropped, blessedly.

Being snarky about fake TV people is a hobby for some people. That is the main reason such programs exist. I suspect few watch them for romantic reasons.

We don't all need to have the same hobbies.

Too many channels, not enough talent in the business to create quality shows to fill all that airtime. So I think reality shows will continue to thrive. They are cheap to make (no writers, no sets, no high-priced pro actors, no extras, etc. needed) and no shortage of people wanting to be on TV for next to nothing.

If I remember, reality shows blossomed during a writer's strike years ago and never left.

I have Netflix only and there are lot of high-quality shows on there. I've been delighted to find some in French and followed one in German.

But- I have to admit that my guilty pleasure when staying in a hotel is to watch Say Yes to the Dress, My 600-lb. Life and various shows on HGTV. Maybe it's because I can look at those people and say that no matter what, I
know I'm not THAT shallow, overweight, clueless, etc.

And when my granddaughters get older I WILL have them watch a few episodes of "Teen Mom" if DS and DDIL are OK with it. I want them to see what happens when a teenage girl with an unplanned pregnancy tries to get a job, continue her education and take care of the kid and thinks the Baby Daddy will stick around. So far I haven't seen a single episode where it worked.
