The NextDoor Neighbor Feed is Just Ridiculous

I’ve occasionally learned of good places nearby (local restaurants, shopping) through Nextdoor but not often. I finally figured out how to minimize email from it. I agree with the characterizations of most of the posts, just noise.

I have never posted anything and will keep it that way.

i turned off the emails and may have forgotten my login. I think this improved my quality of life

I just noted that our town started an account there. They promise to post items of interest.

The only thing I find NextDoor useful for is getting feedback/references for local contractors.

Our local government already does - it brings out the crazies, especially anything related to health.

I have zero interest in whiners and complainers.

I avoid paranoid people like the plague. I wonder how they got so afraid. I sure don't want to get it.

I know almost nothing about my few neighbors; they know less about me, and I intend to keep it that way! :D

We currently co-exist peacefully with each other and that's good enough for me.

I chastised a nextdoor poster today because they berated a local restaurant and said they would never go there again, several others chimed in with agreement.

All that because a table cleaner dumped a glass of water over a railing onto the ground and the horror is, it had a paper straw in it. So this person is posting on social media items that will reduce the everyone's income, because one stupid person "A litterer" dumped a paper straw on the ground. I said she should have told that person not to litter and told the manager, not social media.

Sounds like the restaurant will be better off without those complainers.

I am a moderator for our local next-door. Like all Forums (including this one) there are some off the wall posters but I do think that next-door performs a valuable service. It is a quick way for the local government and police to get information out to people in the neighborhood. It is a good way to get recommendations, to buy and sale, to find an apartment, to find lost things and pets. Just recently I found some keys on the sidewalk in front of my house and I was able to find the owner through next-door.

Noooo! Did you imply they should talk to someone in public? FACE TO FACE? Oh, man, that's too scary. People just want to sit in the dark so no one can see them watching outside through the curtains and be keyboard warriors.

When I joined nextdoor I figured since people had to use real names and addresses the nutjobs would stay away, but nope. We get a squadron of people eager to chastise someone for doing something they don't like, complain about unnamed people for speeding or littering, or creating a never-ending stream of "I saw a police car sitting outside a house on Greystone Road, does anyone know what happened?" or "I saw a bulldozer clearing a lot on Anderson Drive, does anyone know what's going to be built?"

It's like they are feverishly working to be the source of neighborhood gossip if they can get someone to cough up the details they are after.

I liked and used next door for contractor and trade recommendations as well as providing my own input. Not any more. The feed used to be great with just a title...easy to scroll down and click on items of interest. Now the feed consists of the actual thread and just goes on and on and on. I don't have time for it as well as most other social media. And trying to find where to change your preferences... ...

I never joined NextDoor. When I first heard about them, a few years ago, I thought about it but decided to wait. I'm still waiting. Guess it's not my cup of tea.

People love to gossip. I'm not one of them.

Serious mental problems.

I don't even use FB so no interest in any local drama. YMMV

Nextdoor has its share of passive aggressive people here, that’s for sure. Covid exposed a lot of them and made me, sadly, very wary of my witch-hunting and virtue signaling neighbors. Still, as others have stated it can be occasionally useful for recommendations.

The frequent useless Nextdoor emails led me to start selecting "Unsubscribe" the past couple weeks when received.

No value added, therefore became annoying waiting to see if any of the emails actually had useful info.

Our nextdoor has a couple components:
City folk who post about what they fear now living in the country, and country folk who point out the naivety of their city folk neighbors.

Topics include bears in the garbage can, raccoon ? in the cat food, skunks, tarantulas, coyote ? in the chicken coup. Gun shots at 2am, barking dogs, kids driving too fast.

I'm always amazed how some post looking for their neighbors giving them an amen over something that they obviously are in the wrong about.

Gun shots at 2am,

Being in the city, this was a constant topic which has recently relaxed. Every time someone banged two boards together or a kid lit a firecracker, the gunshot posts went out.

An overwhelming cohort of "teacher" type posts came up (in this case, good!) that actually educated people that every little pop they hear are not gunshots.

In the country, I'd suspect the posts would be more like: "Did you hear firecrackers?"

Yes, I'm expecting a lot of noise, obvious questions, zealots waiting to pounce at the drop of a buzz word.

As one other poster mentioned, we found a very good plumbing contractor.

But I think you can get screwy recommendations too. I haven't looked too closely at other recommendations, as we have an abundance of contractors for every need.

Yelp has also been a decent source of recommendations/reviews for me but with the same caveats as NextDoor.

It sees like there are people who monitor sites like Neighborhood so as to make sure no differing thought, not even the slightest disagreement with their point of view, no fact that indicates they might be wrong, goes unanswered for over an hour.

I thank the [-]gods[/-] mods that they keep similar people away from this site.

I don't look at our ND site very often, it's mostly people whining about dogs peeing in their yards, supposed snoops, porch pirates, kids vandalizing homes or being a nuisance, etc. Put out a camera and deal with it yourself! They post as if the offenders are a) reading ND, or b) would care or modify their behavior if they did - chances of either are near zero. When I reply saying you're wasting your time (and other readers), I get a bunch of 'move along' hate - expected and fine. ND is basically worthless, except maybe for local service recommendations. but it sure keeps some seniors and Karen's busy...

I see people bitching how others drive. They love to tell others what their speed is. None appear to have radar guns but they're able to tell who is driving too fast..

This is hilarious. I was driving down a road a month or so ago...at a snails pace. I had my windows down and drove past a couple walking their dog. They YELLED at me SLOOOW DOWN!! I quickly stopped from my brisk 12mph I had been travelling to YELL back at them that I am going 12 MPH, the speed limit is 15mph. They responded, "still you should slow down!"

Sheesh, good riddens.

Someone posted this this morning:

Someone in a brown uniform rang my doorbell today. They left something at my front door. Is this happening to anyone else?

About half of the responders said it was the UPS man. Several wanted to know if he got a vehicle description. I'd say only 25% figured out it was a joke.

I feel much smarter than I did when I woke up.
