The NextDoor Neighbor Feed is Just Ridiculous

It can be very useful if you lose your dog. Otherwise not so much.

What was true 55 years ago hasn't changed a bit, eh?

Sometimes when DW and I look at the mysterious goings on across the street, or we discuss Nextdoor posts, we put on our Abner and Gladys voices.

Abner and Gladys have to go down as two of the best minor TV characters in the entire history of television.

BTW, it appears they ER'd so they should be our heroes. I've seen a few posts about spouses getting on each others' nerves while both being retired. Well, these two handled the problem, sort of.

How does one LOSE a dog?

Cats, I can see as they would leave for a better deal. But dogs, not so much, especially if they have been housed for a while.

Our Golden Retriever (now passed) used to be an "escape artist" and ran on every opportunity, but when he got hungry, he would be back at the front door.

I don’t use my real name on any social media site, not even the ones that say you have to. And I’ve never been confronted or challenged on it because I use names they can’t know are false…

Yep, I don't personally have any social media accounts but since many sites now require them to post comments I took over a dead relative's accounts.

They have become unusually opinionated since their demise. :)

Nice! Although many sites really want you to use a Google or Facebook login because they get more information about you that way, most sites have somewhere (in tiny print) a link that says "sign in/up with email", which means you do not have to link a social media account. (You can probably tell, but I avoid connecting accounts for privacy reasons; I just use LastPass to keep track of all my different logins.)

On dogs going lost. My in-laws on a big farm had "Jackson" for many years. A free roaming dog. He just disappeared one day.

A year later, we had a bonfire in a field beside their house one night during a visit. Jackson showed up!!!

They never saw him again. What a mystery:confused:

There have been so many snake bites in my area lately that the large ER had used all theirs and were temporarily out so they had to find some elsewhere. Why is it so costly?

The same reason other drugs are crazy expensive in the U.S.

Rattlesnake antivenom: U.S.-- >$14,000, Mexico-- ~$200.
Scorpion antivenom: U.S-- ~$12,000, Mexio-- ~$100.

Today's Nextdoor:

Something I was taught at a very early age...
Ah, another preacher and teacher.

I canceled Nextdoor when it was taken over by local anti-vaxxers, of whom there are many.

I keep FB neighborhood to find out about local crime, etc. FBN is even amusing sometimes - I've picked up on some local "insider" jokes.

But mostly, it's ignorant whining and paranoia.

Also, most posters seem to be female. Not sure why. Maybe they have more free time than the men do?

Did you ever threaten him with neutering?

I am a moderator for our local next-door. Like all Forums (including this one) there are some off the wall posters but I do think that next-door performs a valuable service. It is a quick way for the local government and police to get information out to people in the neighborhood. It is a good way to get recommendations, to buy and sale, to find an apartment, to find lost things and pets. Just recently I found some keys on the sidewalk in front of my house and I was able to find the owner through next-door.

This aligns pretty well with my experience. I did not realized there were moderators. It’s gone way downhill but still overall positive for me. It’s easy to avoid the whack jobs. I don’t get any emails and I only open the app a few times per month mostly to see if anyone has junk to sell or give away.

I am sure the moderators for ND vary widely. In my neighborhood the moderators are pretty strict, no politics (including the mask and vaccine debate), no spam and no harassment.

Currently having a chuckle about ppl upset with poop on sidewalk. Poster doesn't know why dog owners don't pick it all up BUT it's not dog!! We have fox, coyote, bob cats, and even a mountain lion that have come in for water. Yes, there's dogs but unless they poop bones you're just as capable as picking up after them.

Here is exburbia, everytime someone sees a coyote, there is an extended discussion over how dangerous they are or are not. We had a whole den with pups in the next lot over and other than some poop and howling along with sirens, they are really no bother.

For the coyotes living near you, just make sure there is a steady supply of cats for them to feed on.:D

I've noticed the rabbit population is picking up while I'm not hearing the coyote's at night. It all runs in cycles.

Well, at least so far, it's animal waste in the burbs. Downtown?...:(

What is worse for me is that people of color are automatically evil doers and cries of call the police are posted multiple times. My son, who is a person of color AND an attorney, had the police called him because he was jogging at dusk. I live in the south now, but really. 😡😡😡😡

This is one example of egregious abuse that things like Next Door encourage. People have always done stupid and dangerous things, but now social media gives them an instant "megaphone.":mad::mad:

Sounds like a law suite in the making.
