You darn betcha they did! Many also merged, downsized or went out of business...

I retired in 2005 after spending 27 years in that industry. It reached its peak in the early 1990s in the US when around 90 billion checks were written annually, an estimated half of those (45 billion) by consumers. It has declined dramatically since then.

I got out just in time. :)

So I guess I'm done with Marcus - too slow to catch up with others in interest rates and now I learn that the AARP bonus on savings accounts with them expires after 24 months which is how long I've had the account. Not sure I want to be bothered with another online bank - may just transfer the funds to one of my brokerage accounts and go with a money market fund until I decide on a longer term investment. Also time to consider downsizing of the number of accounts I maintain. I have checking with a local CU but only got into it because of a $500 promotion they had a few years back. I think it could go too as their main focus seems to be loans and I see little need for such going forward.

IIRC, there are a few cards that offer an enhanced cash back percentage when paying utility bills.

I’d love to hear about those. My utility bills are crazy. They charge fees if you pay with a credit card too. I don’t even know of another card as good as Penfed’s 5% cashback all-the-time statement credit for gas.

I suspect companies that make personalized checks for folks have either had to downsize significantly or add other products to sell to stay in business.

I write about 10 checks per year and just started on my last book of 25 so I went to reorder from the bank. The cost was gonna be 75 cents per check! That seems outrageous so I went to a 3rd party site. They keep upselling…BOGO, checkbook covers, return address labels, etc. I’ll probably never run out now but I paid about 25 cents per check.

If you order from the bank, they order from a vendor. When you buy checks through a bank, you are charged a markup!

The last time I ordered checks, I ordered the free ones. I’m not expecting to run out…….

25 cents per check is still ridiculous. I just looked. Walmart charges $7.96 for a pack of 120 with free shipping. That's under 7 cents per check.

I had to go look... There's only 20 checks in one of my new book of checks... Why? Because I order my checks with carbons. (Too lazy to make entries in a check register I guess) Anyway as I said earlier, a new book will last me at least 6 months, maybe closer to a year these days. But, I still have good reasons to write some checks, so I'll keep em.

I opened a new checking and savings account at Citizens Bank that’s giving me $600 for opening a savings account with $5k new money and $500 direct deposit total within three months into the checking. To good to pass up. I’ll pull out the savings as soon as I receive the bonus. I may keep the checking for a while just to have a brick and mortar bank, as long as I don’t get hit with any fees. I think that just needs an average daily balance of $200 maintained.

I don't see an offer in my Discovery Bank Hi-Yield account, so it may be a new account bonus only.

If the offer is on existing accounts, then it looks like a way to stem the tide of account closures that are gonna come if they don't raise the interest rate to match Ally, as a minimum.

That Citizens Bank offer looks tempting.

I got the offer through a mailing with an offer code last month. I don’t know if you can find it online, but it never hurts to call and ask.

I checked my emails and I haven’t gotten that offer either. Been a DiscoverBank customer for a long time.

I am a long time Discover customer as well and did not get an offer. I did a search for Citizen's Bank and saw a link to Discover for the bonus offer (towards the bottom of the page, good for five remaining days). It appears that it for customers who don't have a savings account.

Same here from being a BOA Preferred Platinum customer.
I think when I last ordered checks I didn’t have any rank. They have since talked me into preferred Gold level. But I’m writing so few checks a year it doesn’t matter any more.

I am thinking of calling Discover and sure they would give me the same thing but i just sent them $38k two days before my wife got the email. Maybe i need to pull back $15k and resend it to them. For sure i have done dumber thing for $150. :)

I saw 4%, 5 year brokered CDs on Vanguard this morning. Problem is that they were callable. I am waiting to pull the trigger hoping for noncallable at 4% (or more).
