Elon Musk Begins Mass Layoffs At Twittter

SpaceX is going to be worth trillions so I guess in the end this 44B fiasco will just be sofa cushion money for Elon.

The following text in this post (not counting my signature below) is unedited and it's as clear as I can be about what I think Twitters value "has been" in our world.

In addition to the federal WARN act I think California has its own version. Getting fired might be the best way to exit as a Twitter employee

I don't Twitter, never have, probably never will. But, I am quite curious to see if Elon Musk's pay-to-play model eliminates a lot of the bad things one hears about Twitter, like all kinds of hate speech, trolls, bots, scams, etc. Kinda like the old way of businesses raising rates or the cover charge to keep the "riff-raff", or trouble-makers, out. So, I'll be following this.

Musk being interested in reducing hate speech? Hmm, I guess he won't be able to post either.

In my career I've been through a few company buyouts and subsequent layoffs. Mostly either used the layoff to my advantage to better my next career path or was in a position they couldn't afford to lose. Just as lots of people have.
That being said, Elon is doing what has been done many times before. He buys a company and wants to run it his way. What is wrong with that? If people get laid off then they get laid off. It's not pretty but it's business. The ones who remain are expected to pick up the slack. Just as it's been done many times before.
Now if someone doesn't like Elon for whatever reason, then that is their problem. Get over it. The man has accomplished more than most of us can only dream about.

I worked for a guy who was a lot like Musk. He wasn't born on third, poor with little education and hungry. We had a small team that did things others said were impossible. A survey on our leader resulted in a question about "manipulation" the entire team marked he was extremely manipulative. He reviewed the survey in front of the team I thought he was going to cry.

While he was exciting to work around, it gets old. I was with him for a year while Megacorp was doing Y2K preparation work. If you had already put in 50 hours M-F Megacorp would pay you to come in and code all weekend long.... their money lasted longer than my ability to work 7 days a week.

Employees will receive an email tomorrow morning (either to their personal or company email account - depends if they still have a job)…

I was laid off once - it sucks!

fired by e-Mail notifications, how cold! I expect more, as e-Mails can be faked. I would be asking myself, "Is this real, or a spoofed e-mail?"

I've been thru several layoffs myself. on both sides. It wasn't good for those who were laid off or for those remaining. I am hoping all of them can get over the impact quickly.

I think working at SpaceX or Tesla, and working at Twitter, are very different things. I can see being motivated to work ridiculous hours on a space program or saving the environment. But what's the motivation for rank-and-file twitter employees?

As for Musk himself, I have mixed feelings. I have to respect his accomplishments, and his drive and determination. I'm glad he disrupted the space launch and EV industries.

But being smart, driven, rich and powerful isn't a good combination. Too much opportunity for that to turn out very badly. I know he has Asperger Syndrome, and he's talked openly about it. That's not the problem. The problem comes when anyone gets to the point where they have a lot of power and they start to feel they're always right, and nobody can say no to them.

Let's face it. Musk is a genius. But he often flies "off the cuff" and genius' often don't know their personal limitations. When you've got the net worth of Musk, you're surrounded by yes men.

Mr. Musk was also hoo-doo'd by Twitter on the numbers, and he wasn't given honest information about the company. Twitter management and many employees knew they'd be shown the door if the deal went through.

He also didn't receive the best accounting and legal representation when making the initial offer for the company. They didn't do their due diligence. Once his offer was accepted, Musk couldn't back out of the deal.

Now, Mr. Musk is stuck with a big, fat company with a huge number of employees and simply too much overhead. As in any unprofitable company, the first cuts start with cutting headcount. Twitter will be surprised at how much smaller the company can be in personnel and still get the job done.

Personally I see no point in discussing the person. We know so little and rely almost entirely on a media we distrust by default. Like most high achieving people, he has many positive and negative qualities and attributes. Same applies to the rest of us as well (except we’re not rich). If he wants to be part CEO and part celebrity, that’s his choice.

Twitter is both a swamp and a diamond mine, (probably 95% swamp) but still it’s pretty easy to access the part of Twitter that is beneficial and use it in a positive way. The ability to filter out the slag and dross and focus only on the beneficial part is simple and easy. This is Twitter’s great advantage over Facebook.

I think there is more upside to Twitter, and Musk seems to have a clearer view of this than the previous executive team.

Wow!
The man has single handedly advanced space travel by 50 years, put electric cars into the realm of reality, on the path of fueling every home with rechargeable batteries and all I read is rumors of how bad he is going to be to the employees of Twitter before having done anything of the sort yet. How come so much hate for someone that has done so much good on just rumor and speculation?

What we are not allowed to speak of in this forum: politics. He is threatening to undo the comfortable collusion between Big Tech censorship, the government, and the media. He must be cast as the Bad Guy by the powers that be. And people are apparently buying the narrative being spun. What's new.

I have a Twitter account to read stuff that's tweeted, seems like a lot of news is disturbed through the service. I understand if you replace "twitter" with "nitter" in the path you are able to read tweets without an account.

Never had a Twitter account and for sure don't plan on starting one.

I still think the best form of social media is old school email.

Well put.

Some people don't like free speech.

He paid $44 Billion, so it is going to take a very very very very very very long time to get that money back charging $8 for user verification. He will have to lay off 90% of Twitter to save millions in salaries and get his money back :)

It'll be a soap opera.

It isn't a "free speech" issue if Porky appears on this thread. Private firms can moderate any way they want to.

I love twitter - greatest way to get breaking financial info and world events.
Also, I love sports and it's a great way to get latest scores and bond with like minded
sports fans - can also be a bit toxic at times.

The poor remaining Twitter employees is what I think of most. Reminds of me of scene in the movie "Glengarry Glen Ross" when the character played by Alec Baldwin says the good news is you're fired. The bad news is you have one week to get it back.

Brings back memories of megacorp.
