String Trimmers

I’m a little surprised EGO hasn’t been mentioned much. I have an EGO string trimmer, edger, hedge trimmer (one head, three attachments) and blower - and I will never go back to gas, corded or cheap lawn tools. I’ve had them for almost 4 years, zero issues. I’ve had cheapo gas and corded lawn tools in the past, I wish I’d bought better tools 30 years ago.

And when my Honda HRX217 mower dies, I’ll buy an EGO mower too.

I like EGO. I have the trimmer, blower, mower, and 2 stage snow blower. The trimmer cord broke a couple years ago and despite hours of trying I could not get a new one in properly so haven't done any trimming the last couple years and probably never will again. It worked great until the cord broke. I'm sure most people can replace the cord with ease but not me. Most of my batteries are 5 or so years old and work great. I am on my second mower though since the self-propelled motor died on the first one after 4 years. I also will never go back to gas or corded.

We have a blower and whacker from them. Awesome tools. I would have tried a blower, but we were in the middle of massive snowfall when I found a gas machine.

I've owned several string trimmers over the years from corded 110 volt, battery powered, 2 stroke, 4 stroke. One string trimmer feature that I've always felt was a better alternative to the included string head is an individual string head versus a bump string head. The strings are typically much heavier duty and there are no jams or moving parts, just push the strings in and they lock like chinese handcuffs. YMMV

here is an example:

Black and Decker string trimmer here. Already had other B&D battery products, even have a conversion bracket to use a lithium battery in my old NICAD B&D hedge trimmer.

I bought a generic 7AH lithium battery from Amazon and I can use the trimmer for 45 minutes per charge.

Have read some about those adapters. Seems like a good solution.

I guess the nice thing about battery powered tools is you can swap a spare/recharged battery as ~quickly as refilling a gas powered tool and keep going. Too bad that's not true for EV's.... Yet....

The only thing missing on the battery powered tools is a CARB requirement that makes us splash and spill fuel all over the place. Not sure how they'll manage to screw up a battery replacement, but I have confidence in them. They will find a way.

I'm late to this thread, but I agree on skipping the bump string heads. Much prefer the individual feed system like that mentioned.
As far as electric vs gas, the electric trimmers have been far superior for quite some time now. I happen to have the DeWalt 40V series that has been abandoned in favor of the 20/60v systems and I'm quite satisfied, but I think most major brands will be fine. Stick with a brand so you can share batteries with other tools (blowers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, etc)

I have a top of the line Dewalt 60volt battery trimmer, two speeds. I’ll NEVER go back to gas powered. This thing is on another level with torque and ease of use. Beautiful

I've been using straight shaft 2-stroke Stihl line trimmers for many years but have gone over to Ryobi 40V equipment over the last year. I just packed one of my Stihl trimmers and my Honda gas mower into a container that is heading out west to my son later this week. I absolutely love the Ryobi stuff. The Ryobi blower is more powerful than my Stihl blowers and the lawn mowers are also excellent. And everything is quiet and fume free. And no more searching for ethanol-free gas or any gas! And I can use the batteries with an inverter as an emergency household power supply if power goes out. Love it.

My old Craftsman died the other day when the spool wore through from bumping on the ground to feed line, and the spring inside flew into the Twilight Zone. It does not w*rk without that and it is no longer available.

That bottom cover on ours got thin, wear, from rubbing on the ground. I covered it with epoxy, a few years later that wore off. The next fix I used was baking soda and super blue and put it on several layers deep. I think the baking soda and super glue is the better fix. It gets hard as a rock.

Good custom engineering fix. :D

I have another spool, but no spring for it. With no spring the line unspools all at once. I do not know the spring size.

Oh well, the new one arrived this afternoon. I will try it tomorrow.

Today, I cleaned and treated my motorcycle leathers, boots, and 2 pairs of gloves. Also cleaned the helmet. Goodbye Plexus. Hello Lemon Pledge.

I have been using the EGo battery trimmer for 1.5 years. I especially like the auto spool. Run the line through one eyelet and out the other so that the line is at the same length on both ends... push a button, and the line spools up. The bump feed while trimming works well too.

The balance is good, and the battery runs (front lawn and back are medium-sized) for around four weekends before needing re-charged.

My ONLY complaint is that the handle that is a quarter way up the rod is stationary and cannot rotate (like my old electric one did) when I move from a standard trim position to an edge position.

A week ago, I helped my neighbor repair her water pump, I returned and she was weed whipping, she stopped and complained that she had a lot of trouble with weed whips always breaking, she said her son, living next door would not let her use his anymore because of that. She said, "this one isn't working very good", I turned it up to look at the string, instead it had the plastic cutters that are about 2-1/2 inches long, except one was broken back to zero inches and the other was about 1/2" long. I said you need to replace these! She said, "Oh, I have them" after a search, she couldn't find them. :(

Sta-Bil and Sea Foam go in every small engine we use.. Never have had an issue after stuff sitting a while.

I've been using Sta-Bil in all the gasoline I buy for the mower and generator for about a decade. More recently, I've used engineered fuel to test the generator between uses (every 6-12 months), just a small amount and let it run out before putting the generator away.

My only sources of ethanol-free fuel at the pump are further away from home than I'm willing to drive with a can of gasoline in the car trunk.

As D.Thomas notes, the new EGO trimming heads make loading string much easier. I've been through three heads in 6 years since DW runs it on the ground when she uses it and the plastic head gets abraded away. The new heads are easy to install and even easier to load with line.

We've been very happy with our EGO string trimmer, hedge trimmer, blower, and to a lesser extent chainsaw. After 6 years the batteries are still chugging along fine. We also have the power inverter which DW uses for her computer and mifi when she's w*rking out of the car.

I've standardized on 56v EGO cordless tools for the yard and 20v Dewalt cordless shop tools.

I'm in the market for a new string trimmer. Can't decide if I want electric or gas engine type. Most importantly, I want one that has a feed that works well..Who has one they love?

Gas powered are a pain if you live somewhere with winter where they need to be drained and stored. Always a pain to get started too. Electric with a cord can have good power but not practical.

Bought a Ryobi 40V battery unit that takes all kinds of different heads. Is amazingly effective, easy to change head, not expensive and super mobile. Okay…. Not something for the professionals or a big property but I find it great for the price

I'm another EGO fan: mower, leaf blower, string trimmer. When I bought my first EGO tool (mower) I researched the expected lifespan of batteries, since they're **expensive** to replace. The studies I found indicated a battery should last for 500-1000 charging cycles. I figured, no problem, mowing about 25 times a year, the battery should outlive me by quite a bit! Not so, unfortunately. After 4 years it was down to 15 minutes run time, and I discovered the 5-year warranty doesn't cover the battery, 3 yrs only. Grumble.

So I sold the mower & battery to someone with a tiny yard who didn't care about the short run time, and bought a new mower. With selling the old one, I bought the new mower + battery for about what it would have cost to buy a battery for the old mower. This time I'm storing my batteries indoors over the winter -- I suspect leaving the battery on the charger in cold weather wasn't good for it. Many sources say charging in sub-freezing temps damages the battery.

So hopefully this battery WILL outlive me. After at least 500 charges. :)

Change your landscaping so you will never have to own one again.

Lawman.... As expected, recommendations are all over the board. Did you decide on anything?

I didn’t read through all the comments.
I saw Stihl mentioned a couple of times.
I have several acres so gas powered is important.
I use Stihl exclusively.
If I had a suburban lot I think battery powered such as Ego might be a good choice.
B&D used to be a good product.
I’m not impressed anymore. Just my personal experience.

I have the Ryobi 40 V convertible, string trimmer and it works wonderfully. I also got the edger with it which is a tool that I wonder why I haven’t had one before.
