Why do you get out of bed in the morning?

If you have been fully retired for at least a year, why do you get up in the morning? I would like to hear some reasons.

I get up in the morning because I can do what I want to, not what my job dictates that I do.

That's reasons 1 through 100, I'll get back to you with more later...

I get out 'cause the darn bed starts getting cold once DW gets up to go to w*rk. ^-^

It's been a little over a year for me and I wake up because I've had enough sleep.
I must say that people told me when I retired I'd be back to work after 6 months. That is not the case, I enjoy getting up when I wake up with no stress and nothing to do unless I want to do something.

Really don't do much and I don't want to do much. I had too much to do for too long and I'm more than happy doing nothing. I hang out on the forum a bit and enjoy doing what ever I feel like doing when ever I want to.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Life is good; if not great sometimes - I'm in Taos NM right now and am exhaused from mountain biking along the Rio Grand. The nights are a little too cold for my liking - but you can't have everything. I had to beat home for a couple of months and I was getting bored.
I get out of bed in the morning because life is an adventure and about moving on to then next step in my growth - whatever that might be. Hey what is around that corner - sorry - I got distracted.
There are highs and lows to everything - if you are stalled - go for a walk and look at the trees around you.

Finally - it is better getting up for this life than it is going to a boring and easy job where I made a lot of money - it was killing me.

Life - better than the alternative.

Hey this was my 2001 post - do I get a prize?
It wasn't a bad one either - if I say so myself - and I didn't even have a glass of wine yet.

From Oct 28, 2003 to now - not a lot of posts - some might have been meaningful

I drug my overworked, overtired a$$ out of bed at 4:45 am for too many years. I HATED waking up to a clamoring alarm. Now, like others said, I wake when I have had enough sleep (or my bladder says I have). I take great satisfaction in slowly becoming aware as I lie there that I DO NOT HAVE TO GO TO WORK EVER AGAIN!!!! Then I get up as do anything I darn well please. I am busier now than ever, just on my terms and now I get enough sleep to enjoy life.

The birds are singing sweetly as the dawn breaks over the Superstion Mts and the roads have less traffic noises to bother me and the coffee is so good at daybreak. Besides after 5 or 6 hours I have had enough sleep until I call for a nap time with the Bulldog!

I wake up for a hungry screaming baby.....no need for an alarm when you have one of these!

I've gotten used to the fact that my sleep patterns are permanently screwed up from years of weird hours and shift work. Almost four years into retirement I still go through periods where I will stay up late and get up with too little sleep. So this year I volunteered to take the youngest kid to school. Up at 6 with him makes me go to bed at a kind-of decent hour.

Sometimes, to drive DW to school, 2 - 3 days a week depending on the semester so she doesn't have to hike a mile for parking. Otherwise when I get fidgety and want to go do something, then I go find something to do. Or not, as I feel like it.

Sometimes, like Leonidas, sleep patterns get messed up, but I worked straight day work for the last 11 years so I doubt the 18 years of shift work before that has much to do with it.

I like waking up in the morning (with NO alarm clock), and just lounging there for a while, while I ponder venturing out to explore what life has to offer! I like going out on the patio and watching and listening to the (early) birds.....and checking out what growing in the garden! Then I go back in to get cleaned up and dressed, have some breakfast, and then start my new adventure for the day!!! :D

Kind of like the last "Calvin & Hobbes" comic strip:

I have always been a morning person. Most of my career (programming) I
worked 6am - 2pm, usually waking before my alarm.

Nowadays (18 months retired) I still get up around 4 to 5am, but with no
backup alarm clock. I enjoy the quiet backyard with my dogs, or a quiet
morning walk or bike ride. Sometimes I stay up late and sleep later, but not
very often.

Bladders, hunger, and now Leo-- all the good answers have been taken.

I get up because I wake up after having at least one sleep cycle. Sometimes I've had enough sleep, other times I know that I can take a nap-- so I don't have to stress going back down for a couple more hours before a long day begins! A few seconds after that thought, the classic-rock soundtrack starts up in my brain and I'm not gettin' back to sleep.

Besides, I have a surf forecast to check, a huge honey-do list to [-]avoid[/-] execute, and a whole world out there to investigate...

I don't always get up in the morning..... sometimes it's afternoon. I like the nightlife while we're in the city. When we're out of town camping, fishing, whatever, I like to be up early just to sniff the morning air and see what the sunrise has to say about the day's weather......

Because my bladder is full.
:D I make a pit stop around 5:30 AM which allows me to sleep comfortably until 7:00 or 8:00. After that I am eager to be up and about. DW can sleep in for two or three hours longer. I think it is a matter of constitution. Some of us wake up with a smile, others need their coffee...

I get up +- 10 minutes the same time I did for years when I had to set the alarm. Been a morning person for years, so why change. Now the difference is if I feel like a nap sometime during the day, I take one, usually for only 20-30 minutes.

Get up, have breakfast, read some over night eMail, online news and cartoons and hit the street for an hour walk by 8PM.

... cause the kids need breakfast before school.

P.S I miss Calvin and Hobbes

The two dog attack - when they decide it's time to get up in the morning - you get up. The 95 lb Golden uses the paw and nose push and Mighty Milo the 20 lb Pug likes to get waaay back, run and jump on my back or stomach - depending on which I've turned to avoid the big dog. If i resist they will lick.

So I still 'work!' for the dogs who have to check out the neighborhood - people who go to work, kids off to school, and the morning song/bark fest with the dogs up and down the street and up and down the hill. Then they need a little exercise play with you know who before the final whiz and a lite doggie breakfast and mid morning nap.

heh heh heh - sometimes I'm allowed to imagine ER.
