    Government accounting vs. Big 4

I was facing this same decision 2 years ago when i graduated. I decided it was more important for me to have a work life balance, and currently work in the Non-profit industry making $50k and working 35-40 hours a week. Yes, A Big 4 is good on your resume, but when my friends from work were...

Do you ever pull pranks in your office?

We have a whiteboard at work where people out of the office leave their location and dates they will be gone (for example, Fool in Portland 9/1-9/31). We have one co-worker who ended up staying past the date on the board and we didn't know when she would be back. My boss crossed out her 'back'...

How distant is your FIRE date?

Per my calculations - June 2019 when I am 38. O0 But as other posters said, a lot can happen in the meantime. I also did all my calculations based on my current salary with minimal increases - so if that happens to change for the better it could significantly push forward my date. :coolsmiley:

Apt has no hot water for +3 days, withhold rent?

At least you have WATER. I lived in a dive in Salt Lake City that had the water shut off three times in the 9 months I lived there. The water bill was included in the rent payment, and was supposed to have been paid for the whole complex, but the apartment manager kept 'forgetting' to pay the...

    Live Earth concert/carbon footprint calculator

My footprint was 1.5... I really didn't think I was doing anything that special. Probably helps that I ride my bike everywhere (I have a car that I never drive), and that I never fly anywhere either.

What is your one material weakness ?

I was addicted to books for a long time, but I got a library card and have been able to spend a LOT less in that area. I've only bought 6 books this year! For me, the addiction is video games... I have sold a lot of them, but if I go to a game store I can't seem to leave unless I buy one...

    blabbing equal between the sexes

I have to agree with the other posters. I am a guy, and I will often answer yes/no questions with a simple yes or no, and I amazed how many times girls will sit and wait for you to expound on your answer. When they say they wanted more detail I am left wondering.. 'Then why didn't you ask for...

    I'm in pretty bad shape...

Jessica, I am 26, and it looks like you are in almost the exact position I am in right now! I started the year with $50,000 in debts, and at the end of June I had that paid down to $43,000. I now have $3000 in credit card debt, $10,000 in car debt, and $30,000 in student loans left to go. I...

    FIRE me, please!

I'm 26, and I've also wanted to go hit past-self for doing such stupid things with money! No way would I want to go relive those times tho :) I've also tried the same FAs, and I decided to go it alone after doing it for one year. I wanted the FA to help me with learning how to save, etc, but...

Last Time You Went to the Movies

I don't go often - I'm too cheap. A date paid for me to see Spiderman 3 a few weeks ago... what a waste of money! I didn't even pay and I felt ripped off! Before that.. um.. saw 'Pan's Labriynth' - which was excellent. I used to go a lot since there was theater in SLC that was $1.50 (50...

Poll: Do you live within 50 miles of the ocean?

I never thought of that, but it does make sense once I thought about it. Most of the big cities are on the water. And I think TromboneAl's pictures say it better than I ever could! I also live w/i 1 mile of the ocean!

    Dreaming of Affordability/ER in Seattle

Wow.. I calculate I would have to make at least $120,000 to get a loan for a $400,000 house (A GOOD loan - I won't do any of those balloon loans, adjusting interest rate, or interest only loans) Which means that I need to get a 400% raise... and this year I got a 4% raise(highest in the whole...

    Dreaming of Affordability/ER in Seattle

I agree about not living out-side of Seattle. I have seen the traffic downtown when I get off work. Its very fun just flying by 30 cars on my bike on the way home :coolsmiley: Nice to hear that ER can happen even in expensive places. Guess I'll just keep plugging away at my debt! I did...

    Dreaming of Affordability/ER in Seattle

Hey all. I am currently living in Seattle, which is REALLY expensive. I'm at present living on 1/3 my salary, using the other 2/3 to pay off surgery debt and student loans (I just graduated from a Master's program 2 years ago). I'm single, and share an apartment with a friend to save on rent...
