I've been using margin since 2007. Sold off a good chunk of CVX to pay it down last fall. This is the lowest my margin has been based on percentage. At current IBKR rates, I'm letting the dividends pay it down.

I use Interactive Brokers, they charge $1 per trade up to 100 shares. There is a $10 per month SEC fee. I usually buy 5 - 10 shares at a time. Not sure if you can trade the small caps you are talking about, but worth a try.

MO is by far our biggest winner. MO's dividend alone covers 75% of our yearly expenses. PM and XOM also helped out nicely.

DW and I went out and had a nice dinner at the local Amish restaurant. We even splurged on dessert.

The best included breakfast I have enjoyed was at Henderson Park Inn in Destin, Fl. We always look forward to staying there.
