    Anyone disappointed with Enpower/Person Capital?

Their monte carlo financial planning simulator thing went from historical to "predictions" by their FAs based on interest rates, tea leaves, etc. in the last month or so. Lame.

Gifting Yearly Roth Contributions for Inheritance

Just a few years of max roth IRA contributions when the "child" is in their early 20's, then forgotten, can make them a multimillionaire at FRA. As parents nearing retirement, that 7000$ isn't doing us nearly as much good.

Potential treatment for High LDL (still in trial stage)

I agree but with some limits. I have no problem with LDL levels under, say, 300 but if you're pushing 600 and getting cholesterol blobs squirting out of your eye (I forget the name) then it is probably time to reel that in. Not a fan of statins at all and have found diet to be amazingly good at...

Where Do You Get Your Fiber?

I'm in the "fiber is non-essential" camp. If some of it falls into my mouth I won't spit it out but I certainly don't seek it out. It's just present in some yummy things like dark chocolate. High fiber things are often high sugar/carb things so I tend to be very low fiber. I cut off all...

    Retiring but deferring pension?

Whoa, this whole "fire you tomorrow and you get nothing except a return of contributions" thing is very scary. Between lifetime medical benefits (worth what hundreds of thousands?) and a pension (worth hundreds of thousands), you have a huge price tag on your head as a reward for somebody firing...

    Retiring but deferring pension?

There are indexed earnings where your earnings history is indexed to inflation so that the pension grows with inflation while you wait and then there is a COLA'd pension where once you start drawing the pension it is annually increased. If your earnings aren't indexed then deferring the pension...

Success on 900 calories a day?

I have a theory that your BMR is not 1250 and also that you are burning nowhere near as many calories as you think you are with the exercise. It is also becoming clear that you are not accurately measuring your caloric intake. People always think that they are burning so many calories with...

    Sugar and diet

I used to think the same way mostly because I'm an engineer and maybe you are too. I now know that I was wrong. What really convinced me was knowing that sawdust has calories. You can eat 2000 calories of sawdust every day, entirely indigestible cellulose, and die of starvation. Another thing...

Why are vitamins and supplements so large?

I imagine the marketing department told the manufacturer that bigger OTC pills fill a bigger bottle and we can sell it for more money. The buyer thinks they are getting "more" good stuff. They can be too small too. I take the 24 hour costco allegra allergy pills and those buggers are super tiny.

    Forcing a smile while cringing

From the OP "They bought it sight unseen, contingent on inspection, " Isn't the point that they can back out due to the results of said inspection? The term "boiler" is used for any water heating HVAC device. Doesn't have to be a steam system.

    Keto diet question

Uh oh, not so fast, not all sugar alcohols are the same. A common ingredient in current sugar free candy is maltitol. Whoa, that stuff causes a huge insulin response and you are only allowed to subtract a portion of it from the total carb count. Staying under 20 grams of carbs per day...

    weight management: my approach

I agree. It's a goal of mine to stay in the normal BMI range and when a discussion exposes this goal I often hear that the BMI range is BS and nobody is that small. This is almost always from an overweight person.

Any reason NOT to convert the remainder of my IRA to a Roth?

Don't feel bad, we don't give our money away either. You need a roof put on and I'll spit nails all day.

12 hours between dinner and breakfast?

For the last 6 months I've been on the "warrior" diet. Also known as intermittent fasting. I skip food for 19 hours starting at 10 pm and then start eating at 5 pm. 5 hour window to get my calories in. I am not trying to loose weight but I do enjoy a full tummy. Hunger is all in your head...

    Recharacterize IRA tax question please

I just got off the phone with VG again and they assure me that you are allowed to re-recharacterize (roth-tira-roth) and to treat the 2015 contribution as the last type which for me is Roth. It was done properly and notation made in my account. They did say that recharacterizations are...
