    Life Insurance Decision

Thanks for all the replies. Doing a quick check, most policies for $25,000 for a male my age run in the 50 to 60+ dollars a month range.

Big Hitter nailed it -- yes, it is a group rate mixed with active employees in a large county school system.

    Life Insurance Decision

I am currently 64 years old retired and divorced with three adult children. I have a comfortable pension and monthly expenses are thankfully not an issue for me at this time. The organization from which I retired was carrying $50,000 term life insurance for all its retirees. Last week I was...

    Dropped Cable TV Today

I heard HBO may offer in line with the Game of Thrones Season premier.. I can only hope.. the only thing I can't figure out how to get around is MSNBC, not sure if anyone knows of any options there, but I think I'm stuck either getting basic tv and paying for that or just dealing with not...

Gift Ideas for Visit to Ecuador

Hello Everybody, I am leaving in a little over a week to visit my daughter and her in-laws in Ecuador. I am flummoxed over what type of gift to bring the family members. The parents are in their sixties and my son-in-law has one brother about twenty. They are nice people and will extend to...

    Luggage Purchase

I agree with the folks who recommended the four wheel spinning luggage. The maneuverability in crowded airports is a plus.

Poll:When will/did you draw from SSA

I took the money at 62 an I have not looked back. SS with my pension (with an unlimited cola) gives me plenty of dough to have fun and not touch my small nest egg invested in stocks. I am divorced with my dad dying at 69 and my mom at 82. Right now I am in pretty good health, but like others...

    Whither goest the suburbs?

Thank you for starting such an interesting thread. The suburbs still depend of the cheap carbon hydro-fuel technologies that don’t (even with fracking) seem to have a long shelf life. As the costs of transportation increase, the suburbs will further lose their appeal. Fuel costs...

What have you read recently? 2009 -2020

The Warmth of Other Suns Isabel Wilkerson Epic account of the Great Migration. If you do not know the extent of how the Jim Crow South crushed the humanity of an entire segment of the population, I would highly recommend book.

    Favorite TV series

This is indeed the "Second Golden Age" of television. I think the reason that the current crop of movies is generally so poor is that the best writers have gone to television. The Wire Treme Boardwalk Empire Sopranos Breaking Bad House of Cards Orange is the New Black Newsroom

COLA's pension - capped or not capped

I chose to pay more during my working career to get an unlimited COLA provision on my pension. Time will tell if that bet pays off.

    Suicide rates rise sharply

Getting laid off from a job in your fifties and burning through your retirement to pay your bills and keep your house out of foreclosure. Not availing yourself of medical care because you can't afford it. Sounds like a recipe for depression to me.
