    When is enough , enough?

Too many unknowns ahead. Will I need LTC? Will we buy into a CCRC someday. Will we still have enough to do some travel. 70k of pensions & SS and I still think new cars and some desirable hotel destinations are too expensive. It's enough to pay my bills and take a couple cheap trips. 42k of SS is...

Those Who don't/didn't do Roth Conversions

One receiving RMD and SS can have a younger spouse who's RMD & SS is in the future. DW's age 70 SS & RMD will nearly double our income.

Those Who don't/didn't do Roth Conversions

DW & I both have 401ks. DW is the sole beneficiary of My 401k. I'm about to figure out how much roth conversion I can do for this year. DW does not yet have a Roth. We can convert hers or mine. It's all gonna be hers anyway. Is there any benefit for DW as the survivor, of converting some of...

    My FICO Score

Within a few months 1.My bank transferred the servicing of my mortgage to another service provider, whatever it is that they are called. The new service screwed up the rate, which was resolved with a phone call. Apparently this looks like another mortgage on my credit report 2. I was able to...

    Your recent repair? - 2021 to ?

I'm fixing 2 Bunn coffee makers. One is a A10 commercial style one. It's leaking water and has a blown thermal fuse. I replaced the thermal fuse with one I had on hand but than it leaked water. Ordered a gasket from Amazon, than, after a week, they gave me a shipping date a month away, So I...

    Your recent repair? - 2021 to ?

Over the years Grainger has often been my best source for parts for HVAC & appliance parts. Capacitors, motors & fans. I even get a discount cus I had worked for a company that bought a lot of stuff from them.

How many sources of income do you have?

I would pick up a quarter because I can buy a cold bottle of water with it from a vending machine at SamsClub. It's almost worth the quarter to watch the machines robotic mechanism select your bottle and place it in the bin, than open the door.

RMDs are they really something to worry about?

All this stuff was out of sight, out of mind when I retired at 57. I didn't think much about it til my first RMD at age 70. So than I started doing Roth conversions to use up the 12% bracket, on the other side of the tax torpedo. A few years of that and I realized the conversion amount was a...

What would happen if one ran out of $ later in life?

I call it 6 legs but a couple legs will fall away when one of us expires. Fortunately we don't need income from all 6 legs at the same time.

RMD calc if you are the 10y younger spouse?

The Schwaab RMD Calculator seems to confirm this. Had to play around with the calculator to understand what it was doing. It does seem to use table III if I enter birthdays as if I am the 10y younger spouse.

RMD calc if you are the 10y younger spouse?

This might be one of those questions that's so simple you can't find an answer. I get it that there's a different table you get the divisor from if your spouse is 10 years younger, but my DW's spouse, me, is 10 years older. What table does she use? I'm thinking she should use the table for "Your...

    I think I know, but...

Our general cost of living is covered by pension & SS. For us, keeping a small low rate mortgage keeps more cash available to spend. Most of our money is tied up in pre tax accounts. Increasing available cash is a good thing. The payment is <10% of our monthly after tax income. I also see it...

    Free dinners

Timeshare hawkers used to be a real annoyance on our winter trips to Florida. They offered free theme park tickets. You couldn't walk into a restaurant without encountering them. We weren't about to waste our time on them. I don't see them so much in recent years.
