    Recommendations regarding Lyn Alden's site?

Thanks! I've subscribed to her free newsletter and am in the midst of reading this one. My favorite of her articles probably remains this one: https://www.lynalden.com/fraying-petrodollar-system/ This is extensive, but full of info: https://www.lynalden.com/what-is-money/ This is a pretty...

Gen Z and "Buy Now, Pay Later" services

Oh my...thanks for sharing, Ko'olau! And I'm a big fan of the Law described in your sig :) MC Rider - reminds me of the tagline on the book Die Broke by Stephen M. Pollan and Mark Levine, which read "The last check you write should be to the undertaker—and it should bounce!" That tagline was so...

    2022 Investment Performance Thread

Significantly less fun to post on these investment performance threads these days... Indexer, with a value tilt. Down approx. 14% YTD, since I'm mostly in stocks (~75.5% stocks, 13.5% REIT, 8.5% bonds, and the remaining ~2.5% in cash). Investment calculations do not cover the rather...

Gen Z and "Buy Now, Pay Later" services

The federal debt-to-revenue ratio is 7.6x, meaning it would take the government over 7 and a half years to pay off its existing debt, if 100% of revenue went to servicing the debt. With that in mind, it's very debatable whether Treasuries are truly risk-free.

Are We Too Conservative with Our Numbers?

Thanks! :coolsmiley: That reminds me of one of my favorite memes: https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/000/681/what-you-did-there-i-see-it.thumbnail.jpg

Are We Too Conservative with Our Numbers?

FWIW, agree with COcheesehead (and most other posters here). You have a number of conservative assumptions, which is wise considering your very long time horizon. Consider also a worst-case scenario: if everything really, REALLY falls apart, such that you run out of money despite your...

    ARK Funds

They say boring investing is the best investing. If you really want some excitement, consider crypto, like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Nothing wrong with placing a very small bet on something with outsized potential, as you've described here. Myself, I'm sticking with the boring path. I'm...

    2022 Investment Performance Thread

401(k): -9.5% YTD. Things look a little rosier at +7.34% if I use a 1-year timeframe (going back to March 2021). I think I prefer to look at that instead! Probably similar results for my brokerage, since I tend to use a similar strategy for both accounts. Oh well. I subscribe to the...

    ARK Funds

Indeed; I keeping seeking old wisdom--this thread demonstrates precisely why. Knowledge of history helps serve as an antidote to any 'gambling' impulses. Generally, I don't make trades or buy things that are trendy; I try to think long and hard before a purchase, with the intent of holding it...

    price question

Not sure. As of today, I'm seeing -0.83% over the past 5 years, but a YTD return of -3.94%. It seems I can't post a screenshot here to illustrate, which would certainly help us refer to the same chart :/

    price question

Ah, then that's a better question for a tax expert (which definitely does not include me!) Seriously, I'd point you to two sources. 1) Investopedia, for a solid explanation of tax-loss harvesting: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/t/taxgainlossharvesting.asp Investopedia is generally...

    price question

@lawman, it seems like there's a lot to unpack here. 1. If you want to know where VFIDX closes on a given day, you can just Google the ticker symbol. Google will bring up a chart, right there on the results page, and you can select your preferred time frame (5 days, 1 month, 6 months, etc.)...

Nice!!! Wise approach. I'm thinking that REITs could serve (at least partially) as a bond-substitute in the current low-yield environment. Solid dividend payments, plus opportunity for price appreciation [along with the obvious caveat that they can go down just as quickly as they go up. And...

Exactly! I did a whole lot of reading and learning when I was in grad school. While I didn't have a whole lot of money, I did have a little. And I wanted to know how to handle my money like a responsible adult before I started making a full-time wage. I'm still learning, obviously, but I...
