what do you think of the new format?

I noticed there is a now an "OP" banner in the original poster's image when they post in a thread they created. I think this forum was the last one I frequent that didn't flag the OP in a thread, so I was always going to the first post to make a note of the OP's handle.

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

Thanks! Yeah, I see it now, but boy is it faint. Oh yeah and I guess the next button is missing on the last page. That'll work!

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

Like the new setup so far! The prev setup was pretty old school and had very small fonts. One odd thing I see: With the page number links (1, 2), the current page you are on is a link instead of just plain text. So I have to read the url to see which page I'm on. You don't always know what page...

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

Watching the news for information is like watching commercials to select products. I don't think looking for the 'truth' from someone trying to make money from you, is a good idea.

Programming a replacement Remote Key Entry fob

I believe most modern mobile locksmiths can do car fob programming. Might see what they cost or if they can do the simple reprogram for a lower cost, which also might put on them hook (to fix) if it fails. ETA: I'd bet YouTube has a video that walks you through the reprogram process and...

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

I disagree with this sentiment. You are not being informed by the news. You are being fed information about subjects that they pick to get an emotional response from you, to keep you watching. Knowing about the latest gossip about some politician or how someone did someone else wrong is not...

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

Have never watched the news. When I lived at home and was subjected to it, I noticed: 1) If I was knowledgeable about a subject, I could tell they were getting it wrong or at the very least missing all of the nuance. 2) It's entertainment, not information. 3) It's just emotional manipulation...

My WAG guess would be, the car uses any "open" WIFI access points it sees. Unless they can push it down over the cell network?

The Technology Connections kid did a poor man's version of this with his Ioniq 5, on his Connextras channel: Ioniq 5

? Yeah, I'm a fan or her and a bunch of people on the Low Carb Down Under Youtube channel.

New cardiologist not care about my cholesterol

I totally agree with your first part, but IMHO, trying to lower it all makes no sense. The numbers/thresholds thrown around are completely arbitrary and don't correlate at all to all-cause. There are lean mass hyper reponders with totals at or near 1000 with zero plaque. I compare it to someone...

New cardiologist not care about my cholesterol

It can be frustrating to understand why cholesterol was vilified. But now, that idea is stuck in the minds of the public and most doctors and will probably never let it go. Nina Teicholz's book The Big Fat Surprise (with full bibliography) can help fill in the back story. Long story short; it...

    What stocks are you shopping?

Looking at SBUX. Sitting at PE of 23 with a median of about 29. 2.6% div that's grown every year for a decade. Double digit earnings growth predicted. Thinking $85 would be a good price. Might sells puts or just buy outright...

The age when you actually retire, vs. the age when you begin taking social security

Just a heads up for future users; unless the UI has changed, I noticed that empty is not the same as putting in $0. Almost got bit by that. If you leave it empty, it appears to use your last year's income for all subsequent years.

    ACA vs Medicaid

This was interesting thing I ran into when researching whether to go with medicaid or do Roth conversions to get into ACA territory here in NV. What you are referring to is Medicaid Estate Recovery and I think it's due to the grey area (state law-wise) between asset based medicaid and the...

    Why get a stationary computer?

This never worked well for me. The laptop is always too heavy with short battery life. I have an LG Gram 17 which weights less than 3 lbs and has 9+ hours of battery (and a wonderful 16:10 screen). My desktop GPU pulls 200W, which no laptop GPU can do, afaik.

    Perplexity, new AI search

So, how would one use Perplexity (or Gemini) for search? I use google.com when I want to find a website with certain content and then click on the given url to visit that site. I don't quite get how a specific AI engine would be used or selected to search for a website.

    Fixed Income Investing II

I think I see the confusion; mrfeh's graph shows the gain if you bought Jan 1. I'm not sure that's a useful number. If you bought at the low of the year, that graph would show something like 7% return. It indicates to me that bond funds are not like bonds as much as they are like dividend stocks.

    Fixed Income Investing II

Where did you get 5.7%? It looks to me like it paid out an average of about 3.2% and the NAV was flat for 2023. Of course that 3% return was if you bought it at 9.60ish. If you bought it at over $10.50 or more (its price for the last 10 years), then it sucks even more.

    Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

Nissan LEAF has an analog speedo and buttons for HVAC. It's about as normal looking (2018+) and operating EV as there is. That said, they are inferior in terms of battery temp management and fast charging. I only make short trips and charge at home so I have no issues with mine.

    Video Editing Software??

+1 on Shotcut, pretty active forum here. You could also use Blender's VSE but that has a pretty steep learning curve. The free Davinci should do anything you need, though I'd think the learning curve on it will be pretty steep too. The pay (studio) version has stuff like multiple GPU support...

Anyone Tried Day Trading After Retirement?

Assuming these trades are in taxable accounts, how complicated/long do you think your tax return will be? Do you have to log every trade or is there some 'lemme sum up' tax form?

    Carvana v CarMax v Vroom

I sold my 6 spd Elantra because I was getting tired of the manual trans. Also, Hyundai told me not to park it inside anymore because it could burst into flames... Yeah, I saved tax on $12k doing a trade-in instead of a separate sell and buy. Nevada only taxes the difference on a trade...

    Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

Thanks! It looks like my garage has 12GA/20A wiring, breakers and plugs. So my plan is to eventually get a 16A charger and use that for home charging. Should give me another mile per hour charging. I'll keep the Nissan 12A charger in the car for backup.
