Should I move all my retirement accounts to Fidelity?

I recently moved 1M+ from E Jones to Fidelity. Definitely, a good move to leave E Jones. Did not know about the transfer bonus offer at the time so I guess that is water under the bridge. It appears that Fidelity is a self-service broker unless you want a managed account with fees. I do have an...

    Why is this time different?

Lots of wisdom on this subject. I agree, we can not know where we are, only where we have been or where we want to go. The present is fluid with many variables and unknowns preventing a clear picture.

How much in muni bonds and where to buy them

Ha, What you say is correct. Should have said that the yield and dollar value do not change if held until maturity. Thanks, fun

How much in muni bonds and where to buy them

BigE, It is my understanding that Edward Jones makes a large purchase and then sells smaller denomations to their clients. Guess this would be new issue. I do not pretend to be an expert on muni bonds, I just know they have worked for me for many years. They have been my most solid investment...

How much in muni bonds and where to buy them

pvbirish, I am 61 and have been buying individual muni bonds for 10 to 12 years. Bond funds never interested me since I intend to hold them to maturity and did not want a fluctuation in price. Income, safety and tax free are all important to me as well. Generally buy my bonds from Edward...

    1. I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die. 2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong. 3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger. 4. There is...

How Do You Know It's Time to Retire?

Just retired, as in sold my business 3 weeks ago at 60 years old. After several years of contemplating the sale and the faltering economy I decided to just do it. After 38 years it was still fulfilling in many ways and profitable, but the profits were declining along with the sales. Could have...

    Put In Perspective

A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them. "Not very long." answered the Mexican. "But then, why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?" Asked the American. The...

Keep going and retire early or take a 5 year recess.

Las200. That sounds like a superb idea. What an adventure it would be. The biggest negative I see would be having to go back to a normal life and routine. In my life, adventure never quenched the thirst, it only made it stronger. When you come to a fork in the road take the one with more...

Would you trade 20 years earlier FIRE for private education for your kids?

Tom52 is correct. The point is to give your children a good education and the ability to make a living in a career they enjoy and can sustain themselves, lest they move back home. A child that graduates from collage with no debit compliments of DD and DM has a great start in life.

Would you trade 20 years earlier FIRE for private education for your kids?

I do not see that private is any better than a good public school. We tried both with our two sons. Charter schools are the best for elementary , middle and HS. Had a friend that announced to each of his children upon graduation from HS that they had been awarded a full scholarship to any...

    Poll on Risk taking

;D#1 It is too late in the game for above average risks. For stocks the turn around window use to be 5 years now they tell you to expect 10 years. Is the goal to enjoy life as worry free as possible or accumulate more money for someone else to enjoy.

    My first month of ER

Marty, Thanks for your post, it is most encouraging to a want a be. My biggest concern about early retirement is the weather and coldness that goes with Winter time. How does that affect you? Seems that Spring and Summer would be a breeze but not sure about that cold indoor time. Do the walls...

Dream Home - The American Trap

A home is a necessity but seems to be a liability rather than an asset for it consumes the largest amount of money in most peoples lives. The ideal (dream) home is one that is practical, comfortable and fits like a glove but most importantly user friendly. The days of formal dinning and living...

Aging parents and wanting to retire

We do have POA for each mother and I know what you mean when you say things are good as long as you are giving it your all but the whining and guilt loading starts when you miss a visit or simply do not have the time for them. This has been my first day to post and I want to thank everyone for...

Aging parents and wanting to retire

Katsmeow, We are much like you and your Mother in terms of such different likes and desires. It would be a disaster to have either one move in with us but we would do it if we had to. Aging parents and wanting to retire

East Texas, You are very unselfish. As a result of your post, we intend to have the same conversation with our sons. It is definitely a feeling of helplessness and guilt. You are kind to not put this on your children. KM, Thanks for sharing your situation and thoughts. I feel some better now.

Aging parents and wanting to retire

MoreBonds, Thanks for your lengthy reply. Your post is helpful. To answer some questions. Both fathers have passed and mothers are in their 80's and do not drive now. Our two sons are in the Navy and deployed a lot. Our siblings do not live close and do not show a desire to help much anyway...
