    Vacation home/cabin use?

We put a pool at the house and said we wouldn't buy a lake place when we were first married. We then lived overseas for 3 years and had summers off so returned for a good part of summers and rented lake places. Four kids who were all below 10 at the time really enjoyed it so when we returned we...

Poll: Who Do You Pick To Win Super Bowl 2024?

Will be pulling for the 49'ers but really wanted to see the dream Lions-Bills match-up.

Different Kind of Drug Dealing in The Villages, Florida

One of my stops when visiting foreign countries is the local pharmacy/chemist to see what meds are OTC and what the costs are. Sometimes very eye opening. Viagara and Cialis generics are OTC in several African countries I have visited and costs were in the 25 to 50 cent range per pill pre-Covid.

    Global Entry Changes

Neither DW nor I had to reinterview at renewal for Nexus. I applied for a replacement card and received it a week later.

Thirty-Six Years Today Stock Market Crash

I remember exactly where I was that day. I was just at the beginning of my career but was surrounded by a group of people who probably took some heavy paper losses that day. My recollection is that they took it in stride.

Do you take low dose aspirin?

Didn't have enough of a risk to take it prior to 60 and don't take it now. Have cut down NSAIDs dramatically since retiring 10 years ago. Way less aches and pains.

    Favorite War Movies

These would all be on my list. The Battle of Britain also holds a special place as my Dad took me to see it when I was 9. We went to the KFC after the show. Fond memories.

Johnson & Johnson new logo because people can't read

Teaching cursive became optional in our schools in 2006 but has become mandatory again starting this year. Based on research that shows that 'fluent handwriting provides students with more opportunities to express their thinking, and helps to develop fine motor skills, increases word retention...

    The Five Stans

Oh I see what you did there. At least Georgia has great airline connections with Delta. Only Stans that I can think of wanting to visit are Musial, Kubrik and Laurel but I think I missed my chance.

    Oppenheimer - the movie

DW and I enjoyed it. We were happy to have read American Prometheus prior to seeing it for much more in depth background. Agree that it was way too loud in the IMAX format. I happened to have recently added the NIOSH sound level meter app to my phone and turned it on just out of curiousity. Peak...

What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Went to Celebration of Life for my next door neighbour at cottage. Great guy, 46, killed by a transport truck. Small town. Probably a thousand people attended. Very sad.

    To mow...or not to mow

Only 62 and still push mow my place, mom's place and cottage 7 months a year. No self propelled mowers and occasionally pull out the reel mower for fun at cottage which it is mainly flat. Home is 1/3 acre of grass (agree much less work than the gardens) and pretty hilly. Relaxing and a decent...

Social life ... or lack thereof

This sounds great. DW and I discussed a QM2 cruise in the past but always figured it would be too high brow for us. Reading the article I can see that I would not qualify as a company gigolo as I am 0 for 3 on the pre-requisites - ballroom dancing, being sociable and having excellent manners. I...

Paying cash for your gas vs credit card...

No discount for cash here. Vast majority of stations you can pump first and pay after except a few stations in the wee hours. I use Costco most of the time. Have app on my phone so it's a wave at the pump and good to go. Only thing pump asks is if I want a receipt. Still looking forward to going...

Looking for suggestions on ceiling fans for new house

We have this remote on our MBR ceiling fan and agree that it is quite functional. I just put one of these in my son's new (old) house and it was a breeze to wire. Does not come with a remote as it is a 44" model. The 52" model has a basic remote...

Thanks for posting. I knew a bit about him but the article in Nature was quite good. 400 million a year in grants from his foundation. Sounds like he was a good boss as well.

    Fireworks- Get off my Lawn?

Firecrackers and bottle rockets have been illegal here since the early 70s and up until about 10 years ago there were virtually no fireworks available except lame flare type things. Last few years have made a big comeback though still no firecrackers and bottle rockets (my favourite). Can get...

    Hyundai Palisade?

Yes it’s interesting on quality. I would say that my sample size in Toyotas is not large enough to make the call. The only one I ever owned was a lemon but I know from others and CR that they are rock solid. Hondas have always been near bullet proof in my experience. My sole Subaru has been good...

    Hyundai Palisade?

Seeing that one of your other choices would be a Subaru and being the owner of both a Hyundai and a Subaru vehicle, I would simply say that a Hyundai is not a Subaru! Nor a Honda or Toyota.

    Best book for young investors

If You Can is definitely the one for the ADHD crowd. Easiest. William Bernstein is my favourite personal finance author so am perhaps biased. Personally, I like 'The Millionaire Teacher' as an easy introductory read. Love The Millionaire Next Door which has many core lessons especially regarding...
