    Blow that Dough 2024

BTD for May: DH and I are driving from South central PA to Metropark Amtrak/NJ Transit station, then taking NJ Transit into Manhattan. We'll spend two nights there, at a very expensive Hilton near Central Park. Going to a dinner theater at 54 Below on the 12th then on the 13th we'll be in the...

A Friend in need , how can I help

No money for the friend unless their utilities are going to be cut off. I paid off a friend's utility bills once each (paid directly to the company). She was similar to your friend-extremely overweight with bad knees. She put off going for bariatric surgery far too long and her knees got much...

    Karma? A Chilling Story

I suspect you are right about the kidney harvest. The docs had no real of knowing his financial status. And it wouldn't matter if they did. Creepy story. My dad learned to drive on their California ranch. They had serious acreage then, so no one intervened. He was 12 in 1940 when he got into...

    Naked Gardening Day 2024

The real point of clothing is protection. Against sun, insects, etc. Given the potential for ticks, biting insects and stinging insects, no just no. The gnats love me and I often wear netting over my head so I don't get bitten all over the face and ears. And pulling weeds I often sit. I was...

    "Affordability" and a new car

I would not base the price of a car on percentage of NW. In 2009 I bought a new Prius, on the idea that I would save about $4000 in gas over the life of the vehicle. It did its job. We do not live in a city, so have to drive everywhere, and it was my commuter vehicle. Last year we purchased...

    Retired 5 years today!

My retirement thread! Five years ago today was my last day w***king. I'm loving it and can't imagine every working a j*b again, unless it's watering plants at a garden store. But I'm plenty busy and have more friends than ever. I'm playing in three concert bands, started my own flute choir...

Walmart limit one Sodastream cartridge per day

But you have to pay shipping if you go through SodaStream. You don't actually get refills. You turn in the cannister for SodaStream to refill, saving about $15 on the $30 new one. Wegman's has separated the process. You turn in the empties at customer service and they give you $15 cash each...

I think we should see them. Why disable them?

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

One interesting and a little frightening thing the new format provides-one can see how many bots are reading early-retirement.org posts. Is there anything the mods can do about that. We don't want to be tracked by bots from who knows where.

Poll: How Many Scam Cold Calls Do You Get Per Day?

I'm 64 and the world knows it. Many calls lately, almost all robocalls. Usually nonworking numbers if I call back. Mostly about Medicare, since I occasionally answer when I am expecting a call from a number not in my contacts list.

what do you think of the new format?

I like the new emoticons. Especially beating the dead horse. I guess I'll have to add an avatar. And they are rather big.

How much do you spend per month on fitness?

$40/month for L.A. Fitness membership-they have a pool. That will be included in my Medigap plan which will start in September. I have to drive 6 miles round trip to the pool, five days a week, but half the time I include other errands (gas/shopping at BJ's), a college flute choir I help with...

    About death and money

This thread got me looking into local cremation and interment. It turns out we have a local Cremation Society, which can arrange affordable cremation. As far as internment, I want a location so family members can look me up if they so desire, rather than being scattered. I got curious about a...

    Free COVID tests available again....

A virus went around locally and I was sicker last week than I was when I had Covid in January. I tested myself several times and was negative. I bought them at our local Wegmans for $8 each.

Controlling the unholy trinity (salt, sugar, saturated fat)

I agree with you. I consume natural fats-from my meats and dairy in my diet and olive and avocado oil-cold pressed. I stopped all industrial extracted seed oils years ago. With my dietary changes my cholesterol went from over 200 to 166, and my triglycerides have been very low for years.

Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024

Did anyone see the comet during the eclipse? We were in Niagara Falls and the clouds thinned out enough to see the partial eclipse in glimpses without the special glasses. During totality, we had about 10 seconds to see the sun, and I caught the corona moving on my phone camera. I think I caught...

Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024

Cloudy in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It might clear up a bit before the big 3.5 minutes. But I was in complete sunshine on August 17, 2017. Not too crowded yet. I guess the forecast of clouds might keep the crowd down. Happy to be retired so i could be here. It will be a 90% partial eclipse at...

The age when you actually retire, vs. the age when you begin taking social security

You can access your SS account and put in zeros for the years you aren't working and get a fairly accurate picture. For us adds up to a relatively small amount compared to if I was working. I retired at 60 and will take SS at 66 years 10 months, FRA, due to spousal benefit.

    Experience with State Farm?

We've had State Farm since we got married in 1984. I was covered under my dad through SF since I can remember before then. DD's agent was a very good friend and I babysat his kids. Never had a problem. Had a couple of flood claims due to AC freezing up in the basement and a couple of car...

    ACA vs Medicaid

Only if you are in a Medicaid HMO. Medicaid is great at covering hospitalization charges. It's trying to find some specialists that accept Medicaid where there are issues. For example only certain pediatric ENT specialists and ophthalmologists in our area accepted Medicaid. Fortunately they...

    For Musicans - Music Notation

As a lifelong musician who learned to read music just after learning to read, there is much more to treble and bass clef than it being shifted by two ledger lines. Treble and bass clef are based on the "grand staff". There are also other clefs. Viola music is written in alto clef, and sometimes...

    Quarterly Tax Question

That was my guess too. I only have to make two federal payments for 2024 as my refund was applied to the first two quarters. My state income taxes are higher because the state treats all income as equal, so I will be making four quarterly payments.
